The 9L will be strong enough if you keep the 2 speed tranny. The only downside to the 2 speed is that you can't use the motor for braking or reverse.

Other than that, the drivetrain is pretty tough. I've only broken the pins holding the gears to the shafts inside the tranny, but upgrading to the slightly larger Jato outdrive pins fixed that (and a little shaft/gear modding to get them to fit).

I would stick with 4s if using the Mamba Max ESC. It should be able to handle 5s, but IIRC, some people say it acts funny. Besides, 4s is plenty for a 9L.
