HB Lightning Conversion

I used the search with no results for questions that i have. I am going to convert my HB Lightning with a Feigao 10L and Mamba Max esc. I am also planning on using Lipo, would this work?

Also what size pinion would be best for my application, i was thinking a 14 or 16 tooth pinion might be best. Also i have noticed that some others on here have a plastic spur on there center diffs what and where are you getting these? Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

That battery would be just about perfect. I think the Kyosho spur(in the link above) is a direct fit for the LSP diff. but not positive. It will quiet things down if your anti-racket but the stock spur would work fine as long as you get one of Mike's hardened pinions and don't mind the noise. As far as gearing, I'm not a hot bodies guy but I would imagine with the KV of the 10L being around 2400 that you would probably want to go as low as 13 or even 12 with the stock spur. Probably as high as 14 or 15 with the Kyosho spur. Check out the "What's your runtime" sticky thread in the brushless section of the forums. I think there are a couple of guys with HB set-ups listed in there.

Okay so i've ordered the Kyosho 46 tooth spur gear and a 14 tooth pinion. It seems like a lot of people are running Feigao XL motors, am i going to burn up my 10L with this setup? I have been using a 10L in my e-savage just fine for months now and that weighs a lot more than my lightning does. Also if i decide to go with the Maxamps 5000HV 14.8 pack what will i need to set my MM cutoff at? Thanks again.

Most people use the XL motors because of the greater torque. As long as you gear appropriately and watch the motor temps, you should be fine.

For the 5Ah pack, I would set the cutoff to around 3.1v/cell, or 12.4v total for a 4s pack.

I've never owned an L motor but if it's been pushing an e-savage around it should'nt have any issues with an LSP. Most guys run XL's or equivalent but I've read about several truggy's that run well on L's or 1512's. On the voltage cutoff, imo, 3.0 volts per cell would be best. You can actually go as low as 2.7 but that leaves no room at all for slightly out of balance cells; @ least 12 volts for safety's sake.

Even XL motors are hot!
On savage it may work because it have Gearbox! I bet that he will get only about 5min before his motor reach critical temperature. I'd go for XL motor anyway

Is that when the motor gets so hot that it starts to question your decisions, even the one that do not matter! Does it then begin to nag and complain? Hope that this never hapen to one of my motors!

I thought Feigao's run most effecient when in the 30,000 - 35,000 rpm range. So wouldn't that put the 10L right in that? If i went with say a 9XL i would be below 30,000 rpm's assuming that i am using the 14.8v lipos. Maybe it's different because there is no gearbox, this is my first truggy conversion so maybe so more of you guys that are experienced with using L series motors could chime in too.

Yeah, keep feigaos in the 30-33k rpm range; 35k tops. The trouble some people have is that they gear too tall to try to get high speeds.

Yeah i'm not looking to do any high speed runs i just run on a small local track and bash in some construction areas and little bit in the grass. 35 - 40 mph is plenty, any more than that and i would just end up breaking a lot of parts.

I balance mine everytime i charge them, just to be safe.

I also balance mine every time. It doesn't take anything extra to balance them. Just plug in a few extra cables, and press charge/start.
