Controller querry

Was looking at FD 1/5 scale E-hammer and wondering what speed control he is using. Says that it is 150amp and 4-10s lipo capable. It appears to have mighty small wires. I also like that 8 horsepower claim too. almost 6000 watts. Even running fully charges at 42 volts, that would require more than 150 amps of continuous power, not likely considering his battery choice. Just wondering who made this wonder esc, I am guessing that it is a airplance esc, as he is still using mech brakes.

I have no idea what the controller is but I would'nt put much faith in what he claims the combo will do. In all likelyhood it's a mismatched, overheating pos. I would think the MGM 22418 would be a good choice for a 1/5 scale build.

Yeah, that controller looks familiar. I know I've seen someone on here try it, but can't remember who it was or what it was in. IIRC, it IS an air ESC.

Strange that he has them available to be put in the truck, but not shown, or apparently available on his web site... Makes me think that he might have something to hide for who knows what reason. One would think if that controller was all that, that he'd certainly want to sell them to anyone who wanted one, doesn't seem to be the case.

Many of the airplane ESCs I've seen also don't have as high pulse current rating as a car-specific ESC. Airplanes tend to use a more constant current, while cars pull lots of current to start, but drops wayyy down once you reach the desired speed.

However, as long as the ESC is chosen with this in mind, there is no reason I can think of not to use an "air" one. Oh, that and the fact most need sometype of throttle adaptor like the pistix module.

Speaking of the pixstix, do I have to use one to run a CC hv85 controller with a "wheel" radio. I have both the pixstix and the hv85, but never used either and did not know if the castle can be setup to recognize a whell radio.

An ESCs throttle input is pretty simple really: it expects a minimum "on" signal of 1ms pulses and a maximum "on" signal of 2ms pulses (50-60Hz frequency). It just depends what your radio puts out.

A wheel radio is set up for 1ms - 1.5ms - 2ms pulses for reverse/brake - neutral - full throttle, respectively.

An air radio is set up for 1ms - 2ms pulses for neutral - full throttle respectively.

Depending on the radio you get, you may be able to emulate both these modes by setting the EPA. But if you have an inexpensive wheel that is not sufficiently adjustable, the pistix module does it for you on the receiver end.

Thanks Brian. Not sure if I told you, but I ran your 2s2p emoli packs in series on my 7xl buggy and it ran well, the batteries only heated up when I tried to get that last 30 secs of runtime when the lvc started kicking in. Do you think the lvc shold be set a little higher than 3v/cell with the emoli? Maybe 3.2v/cell?

I always set my LVC (when possible) for around 3.1-3.2v/cell no matter what type of lithium battery I'm using. It doesn't seem to appreciably affect runtime (since runtime is measured in seconds at that point) and the pack seems to stay in balance better.

That said, I never had any temp troubles with the emoli cells at all, but it was only in my 2wd jato so that could have something to do with it...

They worked great in my buggy, whick is geared 15/51, for about 38mph. They provided plenty of juice, even running in grass. I will set the lvc a little higher next time and try again.
