Help needed for brushless savage conversion -
08.03.2005, 02:07 AM
Hi guys
I have decided to convert my savage to a brushless monster..
I like the smell and noise of nitro, but my wife sure dosn't..
So i have to convert..
I am new to this brushless stuff, so i might ask some stupid questions:o
What kind of setup would you guys recommend, i would like it to be just as fast as it is now, around 40-45 mph.
I am willing to spend around 800us$ on this, maybe a bit more..
Any help or info will be grealty appriciated

There are several motors to choose from, Feigao 9L for $80 12-16 cells, Lehner 2800xl $150 12-16 cells, Plattenburg Maxximum $220 10-12 cells (I think), Plettenburg Big Maxximum don't know specs, Feigao 7XL $90 idk the cell ratings, and the Hacker series. The Plettenburg Maxximum and MGM 120A would be a great combo if you have enough money.

The Feigao 7XL and Warrior 9920 would be an excellent combo. This would run well in your savage with 14-16 cells. Cost is $290. Or, if you feel like going a different route, there is the BigMaxximum and Schulze 18.97kwf. This combo would be powerful on 16-18 cells, but the price is high: ~$700.
The 7XL is quite a powerful motor. It should be able to get your Savage running to your desired speed, with plenty of wheelies too. Since you say that you are willing to spend $800, you may want to invest into some good batteries. The best out are Lithium Polymer batteries. They are lightweight, and very powerful. Only problems are that there is a slight safety hazard (which can be avoided) and they cost ~3 times more than NiMh cells. Let us know if you choose to go this way, and we can tell you more.
SH Z-Car, Custom Crawler, 8s Savage, 12s XTM XLB 1/7 buggy, 4wd 4-link rear/IFS Pro4 truck, Custom Hyper 10 Short Course, Belt-Drive Mammoth ST 1/8 truggy, 4s 17.5 MM Pro HPI Blitz

I would also reccomend the nemesis 7XL and warrior 9920 controller. The BIGMAxximum motor costs about three times as much as the nemesis 7XL, and personally I don't think the extra cost is worth it. You would be better off getting a decent set of batts (1 set of lithium polymer, or ~3 sets of NiMH) and a good quality charger (don't skimp on a cheap charger, get a decent one). Hope this helps.

Hi Viking!
I have got a brushless savage, i sold my bigmaxximum with the schulze controller. I now have got a 9920 controller with the 7XL, you can use it from 14-18 cells.. If you have got any other questions about the savage going BL, feel free to ask.
The bigmaxx, schulze combo is a waste of money..

RC Boyz.com sell a kit for converting the savage. It's a motor plate and cell holders and a spur adapter i think ready to bolt on.No fabrication necessary.
I also vote for 7XL/9920 although i am still waiting for mine but based on Dafni and Serums advice and that it will run nice and cool and efficient on 14-16 cells.
Avoid the shulze by all accounts. It will die in a cloud of smoke.I actually have one with a bigmaxx which i have yet to run but i might e-bay it and get another controller for the bigmaxx.Problem with the plettenbergs is they are 4-pole motors which are hard on the controller and most won't handle them.
I'm expecting the 7xl to be plenty powerful on 14 - 16 cells NiMh in an LST.
Li/po is lighter weight but can swell and burst into flames if damaged or charged/handled incorrectly. They need to be stored and charged in a metal box and must not be over discharged.

The 7xl will work with 12-18 cells. It is a strong motor. Especially for the money. I had one that would run with traffic on 55 mph highway. I was running 18 cells though. The only problem i had with my setup was trying to keep front tires on ground. My truck was 14lbs at the time.
Peace!

You don't need ther conversion, its easy to do it your self. My buddy( emaxxjeremy) converted his buy using battery boxes from a kyosho twin force and made his own mm.

I think it goes without saying that you can make the parts yourslelf. The battery holders are the easy bit.Buying the kit would just be the easier albeit costlier(maybe) option to choose. The Twin Force battery boxes don't offer enough protection to the cells in my opinion and certainly not for Li/Po.If you make your own the easiest method would be to find some u-shaped profile and just cut it to length. He didn't say whether or not he was able to fabricate the parts needed so i was just letting him know that a kit is available.

brushless savage -
08.04.2005, 10:07 AM
Thanks for the info.
It looks like people favors the 7xl together with the 9920 controller, so i guess that that is what i am getting.
As for batteries i think i will start out with normal ones, and then go for some lipo's later on.
Are there anything that i should be aware of regarding the conversion? also are you useing your two-speed tranny as is or are there any mod's that i should do?
Thanks for the help, much apprciated

Are you planning on using the 2 speed transmission with the mechanical brake or did you want to use the BL conversion shaft?
The thing is; Make sure to get the silver coloured type, instead of the black shaft, the black one will die pretty quick, though Rhylsader (another user of another forum) had some trouble with his silver coloured shaft as well, but he allready ran his BL savage for about 500 miles, if i recall correctly..

Whoops..
Excuse me.. I thought it where miles..
Nice mod Rhylsader.. (WINK WINKWINK)
Even with the old type of shaft you can do this mod. It will become bulletproof this way. Two pins allready is enough.
