Basic Revo conversion question - 12.12.2007, 10:34 PM

Hello,

Fun as it is, a brand new Rustler VXL didn't change my mind: I still want to build an e-Revo by late winter (unless Traxxas comes out with a decent e-Revo of their own before that!).

I've read a LOT of threads and seen a lot of videos of the conversions. But I have a few basic questions left:why do so many ppl change so many things on the Revo when they make the conversion? I know everything nitro has to change: so new motor and ESC.

But why change the transmission? Why lock it in 2nd gear even if you have more than enough power? Why change the servos?

I've read many conversion threads talking about changing those things. Why?

There are two basic conversions - E-maxx transmission (built for elec motors) hence all the motor mounts etc but requires some fitting - dremmeling chassis etc

Or custom mount in place of motor - RCM or Teckno sell mounts easy fix

Lock into second gear - So much torque with brushless motors you don't need first!

Changing servos - Most go to single steering to provide room for batteries an improve steering performance.

Hello,

Thanks for the info for 2nd and 3rd question. But are the revo servos all that bad to begin with?

As for the transmission, is it "better" to use the E-Maxx transmission? I ask thi because there must be some advantage if ppl are willing to dremmel their chassis!

Mixed bag really - at the time it was the simpler conversion as there was no motor mount available when I started - now with the techno kit it is probably easier to go the other route. Locking the tranny is a little bit of a fiddle but well documented...

Read this article fully - It helped me a lot and explains both conversions except now you can just buy the motor mount

One of the main reasons why people (including me) lock the stock tranny into second is to have reverse and use the motor for braking. Because of the way the auto-shifting works, you can't do either of these with the two speed. If you keep the two speed, you would need to retain mechanical brakes (and the extra parts/complexity that involves), and you still won't have reverse.

This thread talks all about the different options for using the stock tranny along with fairly detailed instructions.
