Advice for Brushless Setup for HPI Baja

I have a hpi baja and saw a giant lenher motor for it on fine design site ...is there a neu motor that would work for this ? What controller and battery setup could I use? This is prob too expensive anyway ...any advice?

First step to complete a brushless Baja will be a visit to the bank (to either secure a loan, empty your account, or rob it!!!) Expensive project to do it right, but it will be really cool when its done.

what do you estimate the cost of everything?

neu 22 series 550
some nice controller 4-500
batteries 3 5s fp evo30s 900 (or go cheap and buy a123s and do an 18s setup(200))

it would be EASILY 1000 in electronics if you went with quality stuff that would last.

HAHA, I do have a few vehicles, but far from all of them. I do have a savage on the way, which will be one of the last monster trucks still made that I have not converted.

I am actually going to buy a baja ss kit. Not going to convert it though. I have a few large scale gas boats, and really enjoy them, so I think that a gas powered vehicle like the baja would be fun. Plus I have a friend close who has a track setup for the 5b!

If I was going to convert one I would use a large outrunner, some sort of hv esc, and most likely a pair of the milwaukee v28 lipo packs. I may just leave them in the holders and make adapters for them to clip into the car. Not sure if 14s will be enough to move 20+ pounds around. 14s = 51.8v. 3ah x 20c = 60amps cont. 51.8v x 60a = 3108 watts or around 4 horsepower, that may not be enough. I may have to use 4 packs in 2s2p configuration of packs. I am sure that 8hp would be enough.

You would need to do some mod work on the wiring onside those dewalt packs to use them in the case. The wires dewalt uses are way to thin to cary the kind of current an RC uses. Plus you would be acying around all that extra weight of the cases and the crap inside the case you dont need.

Yeah, that is a good point. It is suprising how heavy all of the casing and bs is. Almost as heavy as the cells themselves. Do you think 14s2p would be enough to move the baja around?

I like your idea of leaving the drill battery in the case Lincpimp... although, I would use DeWalt 36v packs, either 2 or 4 packs (with a 10s setup), that way they stay nice and protected, you have built in balancing, and would look plain cool!

I mentioned in the other forum that I cost out a conversion for the SS at something like $3000, IIRC. I used all the best stuff, which you might want in something like this after all.

BTW, Fine-design only has two small lipo packs (he claims 30C....BS), which will most likely be over loaded and/or have little runtime.

I strongly considered converting a Baja, I concluded the driveshafts are not strong enough, they are the weak link in their drivetrain. Even the gas guys have trouble with them even with the best avalable driveshafts they are practically considered a disposable item.

Does the SS not have steel shafts? I thought that was one of the upgraded items on it.

Both versions have steel shafts, the ss has better ones iirc. There are aftermarket shafts that are better still. It is very harsh platform for a drive shaft, I believe there will be some bulletproof ones avalable in time.
