Lets talk caps - 02.02.2008, 03:46 PM

Im buying a R1PRO for racing, and some of the guys in the HK were saying there putting a 16V2200uf, and got more punch & response

So I was wondering, what cap should I use for racing thats on the small side? I need something pretty darn small, because its in a touring car, so rooms is very limited....

Can you guys help me out here? Or am I just wasting money by buying caps to race with? the speedo comes with a cap, and I will use this with a 10.5, and lipos....

An easy one to find are some low-esr caps on ebay... find some 16v and less than 1000uF, that should be quite small enough.

I can a test to using caps for getting some more punch from your system... check my sig. for a link to pics of my modded Quark with 6 caps on a nice bank soldered directly to the Quark power board. I definitely felt a difference in smoothness, and driving power; it was also much harder to make the system cog as it became apparent when driving up steep embankments/big rocks. And it also ran VERY cool, but maybe, just maybe that was partly because of the massive heatsink (or heat-toilet) attached to the FETs.

I dont really need more punch, I like the punch, but with lipos, my LRP Tc sphere had more punch then I wanted in setting 1 (lowest) But that was because it was so cold out, traction was very low..... Never ran the set up in summer lol....

So punch is really something I dont really want to gain, just as you said the smoothness and less cogging... I have no idea what the stock cap is, but if theres something better out there, I will buy it!

You have a link to the caps?

He said the cap on the LRP Sphere TC is the cap he is using, and since I have a blow TC, shoild I steal its cap? Or would the cap be messed up after it let the smoke out?

It is all up to you. New cap is always better.
I would check how much room you have and find a better place for cap with short leads. Then measure available space and pick capacitor from Digikey (from the same FM family) which would fit the best from ~1000uF and up in 16V range, strictly for 2-3S LiPo.

Check datasheet for available sizes.

If I were you I would just use a single Novak HV cap. It can handle 25V so you have nothing to worry about, and its 2700uf, so its plenty big.

It is a pretty large cap though, about a 5/8 inch in diameter and a little less than an inch long.
