Revo 2.5 compatible with G3R kit? -
02.09.2008, 06:26 PM
Thinking about building a G3R revo and I think I can find a 2.5 roller for cheap. Will this work or do I need a 3.3 roller?
Thanks

It will work fine, since you only need the front and rear assemblies from the revo, and the shocks/mounts obviously. Then sell the 2.5 chassis and tranny on feebay to recoup some $$.

Yeah, only the old emaxx tranny will fit the Gmaxx chassis, and there are several on ebay at the moment- expect to pay about $30-40 ish. Thankfully the revo tranny will sell for about the same, so no loss really. If you havent already, concider getting the single speed conversion for the emaxx tranny, or the coupler at least, unless you are after a 2speed tranny. The RC-monster steel idlers are a must though...

I figured I would want a single speed for a brushless setup. Is there a reason to go with a 2speed? So all I need is the steel idlers to make it brushless ready? I plan on using a MMM setup once they come out. Maybe a 5s setup or even 6s if the drivetrain can handle it. What do you think?
Thanks

You dont wanna know what I think about most of the time....
No good reasons to go with 2speed really, unless you have an underpowered setup, or an outrunner that needs a low gear ratio to get spinning properly before switching to high gear.
Yep, steel idler, and concider 'fixing' the input shaft issue- the roll pin that holds the input gear onto the input shaft is known to break easily with BL power, so you can replace it with a hexkey or drill bit which you press into place, before cutting it down to size and gluing with a drop of loctite. You can also use a revo input shaft and trim that down to size to fit the single speed conversion, then you get to have a 3.3spec slipper, rather than the stock emaxx one.
As for the MMM, it is shaping up to be a really good system provided the Neu type motors perform half as well as proper Neu motors. The inital motor it comes with is looking like a 1515 1y item, good for 4s, or 5s for speed runs. Slower motors for higher voltage will follow soon after apparently, so anything from 4s-6s will work beautifully depending on what you are doing (bashing, racing, speed runs etc).
Only other weekness to speak of are the revo diffs, but with an alloy diff cup they seem to do well (removes any flex between the spider gears). Only other upgrade to that is the new emaxx 3905 diff gears, or the RCM 1/8 scale diff case and gears, but those are $100 each.

Wow...this is getting complicated. I'm new to this stuff and having a hard time picturing everything you recommend. Should I just consider getting the new emaxx? I wouldn't need any modifications right? I just kinda had my heart set on the revo, but if the emaxx is gonna be plug and play it's very tempting.

Well, the new emaxx is pretty much bullet proofed from the get go, but the diffs may prove the weak link still when you start feeding it some proper BL power. The Revo platform is a much better racer and basher really, no doubt about it, and the mods required to the emaxx tranny for the G3 chassis are very simple to perform. As for the revo diffs, fitting an alloy cup and maybe case too is very simple, just a matter of transplanting parts in truth.
The problem with the new emaxx is the suspension setup is limited in terms of travel and durability, and the bulkheads break too easily if you just bump into posts and rocks etc. The revo however is a much more durable and able design- you wont be dissapointed. upgrade things as you break them, so dont worry about the diffs until they go crunch, and the rest is solid so no worries there really.

The G2/3R were designed specifically for the 2.5 revo. with the 3.3 you need to either cut rhe stock steering servo link or find one to work
Work because i gotta, play because i wanna
People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise
