Laptops do use a 2.5" drive as opposed to the otherwise 3.5" standard. There are some 5.25" drives out there though, not sure if they are made anymore. They were known as "big foot" drives if I recall...
I actually bought a Laptop HD and a 2.5" enclosure to make myself a portable hard drive. Its nice and handy - plugs in via 2 USB ports (the second one is for extra power) and is 60gb.
