Hey Tash, have you figured out the second gear issue yet?

I used some nice foam tires on my BPP to do some speed runs. They held up ok. I'm not sure who makes them, but they are kind of like your usual dish wheel/foam combo. I bought them from a LHS who had them on sale.

i think so. i think the springs are too stiff. the split ring hasnt even made a mark inside the hub yet so i know i have gotten enough force to make 2nd gear grab. i ran my numbers today and got to thinking. since i'm running 8s1p, i'm probably putting a decent load on the batteries. we all know a123's like to drop voltage in 1s packs. so basically i'm spinning the motor around 30k right now if i'm dropping to 2.7v/cell. i went through everything and all seems right, except for the no shifting part. i think i'm going to just live with it stuck in first until i get the 12s1p running. i know i'll be putting some centrifical force on the clutch assembly then. if i don't get a shift at that point, i'll look at other options.
