5s would be a better choice with the 9920 and 9xl. You could run an 8xl with 4s lipo, but the extra voltage from the 5s will help move the heavy savage around. Plus the motor and esc will run cooler with 5s.

I would use something like the 10XL on 5s.

The 9xl will be ok on 5s, nowhere near the 35k sweat spot.

Doesn't the savage weight in a tad more than a maxx or revo? If not, then sure a 9XL will do.

i thought that the lower the number, the higher the kv rating
and the lower the torque
therefore on 5s:
8=35428rmp
9=31501 rmp
10=28356 rmp
so an 8xl motor on 5s sounds good, any one have experience with that motor setup?

Not sure how you're doing your math but 5S lipo = 18.5, 10XL = 1668kv, so 30858 RPM is where you'll be at. Unless you are allowing for voltage drop, but then that's anyone's guess. I'd go with the 10XL for a savage. 8XL will be too hot at 38,000+ rpms. I use a 10XL in my emaxx and i'm real happy with it.

The higher the number, the higher the Kv. yes... but torque is not determined by the Kv. (the torque constant is; ex. oz-in./amp), all the XL motors have the same Peak torque. Then, however high of voltage you use, determines the max rpm, and thus the torque band (torque goes down linearly in the rpm range).
