Should I tape my CRT.5 truck tires? - 03.14.2008, 12:31 AM

I've gone back and forth on buggy vs truck tires for the crt.5. At my buds backyard track I prefer the quickness of the buggys but the ground clearance of the trucks. At the local indoor clay track (very good clay) the truck tires overall seem better, but the buggy clays are pretty good to.

So, I've boiled off my truck tires to replace the foams, but I'm also tempted to tape the tires to prevent/minimize ballooning. The local Pro 2wd guys say don't tape your tires because it gives you more back straight speed. However, 1/8 scale truggys are all going to low profile tires to improve handling and run molded foams. Together, they don't balloon too much.

Questions:

1. Other than for top speed runs and show is there any reason not to tape truck tires on the CRT.5?

2. If I do tape them what type of tape do you recommend and how many layers?

Thanks!

I got some replies off my local track forum. They recommend not trying to tape the particular tires I have (Panther Switch Clays) because they have molded "X" bracing under the tread and tape won't stay stuck to the tires unless they are smooth.

I'm going to try taping the breather holes shut to cut down on ballooning. I'll report back what I find.

Later.
