trying to make a beercap table

hope this goes here, sorry if not.

i have a wood table i have been using for my work bench on my patio.
the fiance and i went and bought a nice patio set, everything looks nice, except my old wood work bench sitting in the corner. she wants it moved. plus it is going to get hot here in South Florida soon and the A/C would be nice to work on my truck in.

anyways, it is a particle board table, smooth surface, maybe 8x2 ft. i have over 500 beer caps i have collected. i want to place all the caps on the table and pour some sort of polyurithan or something to make a seal. you know when you go to some bars and they have things inside the bar top? same idea, but beer caps. ALOT OF THEM.

what would be my best bet thats not too expensive?

That sounds pretty cool. I would use the same stuff they use when they make cypress clocks. You could probablly ask at home depot. You may also want to consider painting the table first . It could make the caps look better. Im guessing you would need at least a couple of gallons. You would also have to build a temperary frame around the top to keep all the stuff from running off.

ya, the frame is going to the the hard part. 3 sides are flat and the front is rounded.

as for hoping it doesn't run off the sides, i have this stuff at home, very very watery, it doesn't look like it is going to work well. i need more of a syrupy constancy.

thats the question here, what product should i use to make the top?

The frame will not be as hard as you think. Take some 1/8 think luon & tack it to the table it will bend very easy as long as the round part is not super tight . but put some masking tape on it first so the urathane wont stick. It will act as a mold release. I do this when i work with fiberglass to make kick panels. I would go to HOME DEPOT & ask in the paint section. They make stuff for this purpose. You want something that will dry pretty clear so you can see your caps. Thats why i suggested painting the table first.
