new to lipo TEMPS - 05.08.2008, 08:02 PM

ok I have 2 new sets of lipos 4000HV 2s1p maxamps and 6400 2s2p by true rc

Im running them in a twin VXL 3905 with 22-68 gearing or 22 whatever factory spur is

on a 90 degree day running hard in a dust bowl motors were 170 esc with fans were 125 and batts got hot as well 123

after a 15min run

mostly running WOT

IS THIS TO HOT??? I dont want to fry my new batts....how hot can they get and still be ok? I let them cool and they charged fine

how can I keep the temps down untill I get a MMM combo

The batteries are still kind of in a safe zone, but they're approaching the limit that most lipos are good for. I think the max safe temperature is about 135-140F; for example, my lipo has a label that says don't let temperature of battery exceed 140F.

They should still be fine, but you should definitely monitor them, and perhaps drop a tooth or two to be safe on the pinion. Alternatively, you should probably invest in a set of higher power batteries I think, though I would imagine the True RC batteries would run a bit cooler than the maxamp ones (even if the True RC batteries are what, 15C? That's still 96 amps vs. the Maxamps 20C of 80 amps cont.; so a bit more room for current draw).

Yeah rule of thumb with Lip os Hot Lipo (bad) - Over 130F, Warm Lipo (good) is up to 130F. ESC you want around the 100F - 130F and motor 100F - 150F

wow you got those 6400s hot. I run them and have never had them over 105. but then again I was running them on 5s.

My VXL rusty barely gets them 5 degrees more than ambient.

Thats like optimal temperature IMHO. Thats when they really seem to shine. They will quickly warm up to 120ish and stay there rather than keep climbing if all is well, I wouldn't worry. If it doesnt move past 125, I'd say they are healthy and it isnt going to get really higher than that. Take a cold (60 deg.) lipo and compare it to one thats 120. The 120 degree one will output more punch. I'd start to worry if it was hittin 130 and climbing on a regular basis. I'd say you could go for bigger batteries. At least a pair of 6000s for vxls, from what I've seen, they will take whatever you throw at it. Motors seem a bit hot, either gear down or get a fan/heatsink for that if you could.
