kulangflow brings up a good point. there are a lot of different kinds of software to do what you're asking. it also depends on how your .avi file was encoded - some types of .avi encoding are supported; others aren't.
if you use an mac, you can drag your file into imovie and hit 'export to idvd', then use idvd to animate the menus and burn the dvds. again, if it's encoded a certain way. or, once upon a time, i would use a program for apple called 'compressor', which would output at different selectable qualities, and i would bring the files into DVD Studio Pro to create custom dvd menus...then burn the dvd's from there.
if you want it down and dirty, i believe Roxio Toast can change the format and burn the dvd.
well, nero burns .inf files to read the .vob files which holds the movies. which is the same as a dvd at the store.. i would check the comparadility first before you do anything. 80% chance, your dvd player will play .avi movie files.
I have Nero 7 Ultra but I will look for 8. I just put the files onto a dvd as in drag and drop method. I will try burning them to a dvd. Maybe it will work. I have a phillips DVD player. It has worked with ripped dvd's before.
im not sure thats going to work. you can move an avi to a cd using drag and drop. if you are trying to make a dvd with vob files inside the video_ts folder, you need to make sure you select video dvd. there are options there on the left. on the top left, select dvd or cd. then choose the right burning method. this is crucial, all are different.
again, send me an email if you cant figure it out. i do this daily. i have over 800 dvd's or cd's with movies. heh.

nero ultra is different than the vision express. Ultra i believe wont do dvds. Also do the other suggested. Check and see if the dvd player plays avi. The xbox 360 will.
