Two Motors, One ESC "Is Their Any Way?" - 07.04.2008, 10:02 AM

Well Im going to be backordering a MMM somtime here within a half a week and I want to know if their is any way possible for the MMM to be able to handle dual 40a cont outrunners on my e-maxx? Total amp ratins with both motors would be 80a cont and around 150-200a bursts. I know the MMM can handle it but how would I be able to get the MMM to be able to get the motors to run almost sync with each other. Their both going to be running the same spur so I think that will help somewhat. Any ideas on why I should or shouldnt do this? Thanks

It *might* work, but it's a bit sketchy really. The motor KVs would really need to be pretty much identical as you probably know so that they don't work against each other, and some of the cheaper outrunners' KV ratings can vary by 100KV each way. The main problem is back-EMF pulses though; the MMM would see the two motors as just one motor, and if the EMF pulses are even slightly out of phase from the two motors, it could really confuse the ESC and cause all kinds of problems.
Technically it's possible, if you motors are *completely* identical (and I think the rotors/cans would need to be in the same position in relation to stators on both motors - someone correct me if I'm wrong)...but it might well cause a whole load of problems. You'll be better off with individual ESCs IMO, expensive as it is.

I concur.

Syncing BL motors is simple enough, but they do need to be 100% identical to prevent the esc having spasms and cookng itself.

why is it people always come back to this question ? There are plenty of single motors that will be more than enough to push that emaxx. I can't understand the need to risk blowing up 2 small motors and a pricey ESC just to do something different. All it would take is one of those two motors skipping a tooth on the spur if the mesh gets a bit loose, and you've lost a good bit of money.

Where is the sense of adventure in that (?) same old same old thing. I say go for it!, I installed (2) Vellums’ in my e-Maxx when they said it couldn’t / shouldn’t be done and it worked great!.. Nothing ventured nothing gained..

Go for it!..

i say go for it if you can afford the cost of losing everything. if this is the case, then why not try something different. :)
but if youve only got 1 chance (like me) and u cant afford to screw it then stick for the converntional method as boring as it is.

It's not new and different. It's been done and done. It's less efficient than one good motor, and much more risk to fry a good ESC.

A pair of outrunners on an emaxx? What kv and gearing? You will have to run high kv motors and lowlowlow gearing if you are using the tranny.

LOL, you know we are spoiled with the power of BL when we consider "conventional" setups boring!

I'll add my $0.02: Unless you are going for ultimate torque (pulling), top speed, or just want something different, I see no need for dual BL motors. Sure, they can work, but not the best bang for the buck IMO. Besides, for every component you add to the setup increases the chances for failure. There is no right or wrong answer really, it's up to the person and their wallet.
