Weired pinion gear question. -

I was taking the pinions of of my 9Ls today to put on my new ones I got from Mike a while back. I went from a 20t to a......20t. The reason I bought the ones from Mike is because they have a bigger set screw (2mm wrench vs. a very small 1mm wrench).
Well I got one of the old pinions off, then I stripped the set screw on the second one trying to take it off. So I will leave it on for now.
Now for my question. The new pinions weigh about .5oz each, the old ones weigh under .1oz each. So is anything going to be affected running one motor with a lighter pinion and the other motor with a heavier pinion? Obviously they are run off of seperate controllers so I should'nt have a prob with them, but are the motors going to be fighting eachother because one is lighter (spools up quicker) than the other?
I relate this to the lightened flywheel I put in my drag truck. I went from a 28lb. stock flywheel to a billet 9lb. Holly cow what a difference in acceleration. The lightened flywhell was so much more responsive off the line but does it sacrafice top end?
Sorry for such a long post but I don't wan't to ruin my motors.
Thanks.
No, with a dual setup like you are using it, the pinions are connected to the spur and for that reason, the mass on both motors is split in two. (in fact, the entire drivetrain is related to this)
I don't think you will have any trouble with the additional 7 grams of mass. Still, I would dremel the old pinion off. My pinions also have a pretty wide tooth and will be much less likely to strip the spur gear.
Mike, when you say dremel the old pinion off, do you mean to notch the set screw so that I might be able to get to it with a flat head screw driver? Also, when I put your pinion on, I can't push it in far enough to get it to line up with the spur gear, the set screw starts to go behind the motor plate. It's only about 2mm from being lined up perfectly so not that big of a deal.

Sorry, no pics of the truck. It's been sitting for a while. The truck is being stored at my parents house and the engine is at my brothers house slowly but surely being put together.
It's just a stock looking grey Toyota truck with about 350hp. The only things that gives it away that it may be fast is the monster tachometer sitting behind the steeringwheel and maybe the big tires in back (255/40-17s) that's a pretty big tire for a small truck. Oh yah, carbon fiber hood also.
I'll get some pics of it for you if I ever get it finished.
Originally posted by RC-Monster Mike I doubt you will be able to notch the set screw, but it is probably a $3 pinion, so keep dremelling until it slides off!
ooh, that reminds me of the dentist
Johnny, make sure to cover the screw holes of the motor when you do this.
