Good batteries make a big difference. 17/38 should not be sluggish at all. You might want to go down to a 14 pinion and a 40 spur until you get some batts that can handle the amp draw.

That's good to hear. Sometimes I regret selling it because it was pretty bulletproof and was really fun. But, I had to make room in the stable.
