My 12020 Has Gone Crazy (help!!!) - 08.04.2008, 11:10 PM

As the title has suggests, I am having some issues with a BK Warrior 12020...
I recently put together my first brushless system with with a Fiegao 8xl and the BK 12020 combo.
The truck (an emaxx) ran really well and I was having quite a bit of fun with it...
Trying to find even better results with power output, I played with Two different pinions, a 18 tooth and a 20 tooth.

One night I did some tests on asphalt just to see what kind of torque I was getting.. I squeezed a little hard on the throttle and the truck went from wheels to roof in a split sec.. But there was no roof really, as I was doing the test without the body mounted.. The truck landed on the heatsink attached to the motor and crushed some of the fins .. The motor did not spin the first time I squeezed throttle... then I notice the Motor plate was bent. when I removed the motor and "straightened" the plate, the truck work again... A few days later... it stopped again. I tried to re-programme the BK... When I ran it, It got very hot and refused to spool up... It just cogged like crazy..

My first thought was the motor was damaged.. I noticed that the bearings had quite a bit of play in them, so I ordered a new pair... but when I tested again... It did the same... So i ordered a new motor and installed it tonight, but to my disappointment, it did not work... So now my attention has been drawn the BK controller...

Has anyone had this experience before? And does anyone have any suggestions? The biggest problem I have now is that I live in Jamaica.. They are no hobby stores here, so i have to ship everything I need to the island (this is a real pain)..

Any help will be appreciated.....

are you sure the motor mount is bent back perfectly straight. If the gears have any misalignment they will have drag in the mesh which can cause all kinds of problems.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Oh yeah... I forgot to mention this little detail, the motor mount was replaced with a new one.. The gears are meshing well... even when the motor is off the mount, it will behave same...
It's like, whenever I am trying to rev it... it does not want to... Hmm... another thing I forgot... the control and the motor got really hot the first time encountered the problem, so much so the,
the heatshrink started to melt off the BK. When I squeeze it gently, it will run smooth(ish)..

Do you know what your timing is set at? I've heard that this can happen if the timing is too high. I'm not entirely sure about it, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

It sounds like you may have cooked it. It's possible though that something has just come unsoldered though. It may be possible to repair it.

I had a bk that behaved the same, and I found a resistor on the back that was hanging half off the PCB. I replaced that resistor and it ran good until I shorted the motor wires and smoked it. Not sure if that could be an issue with you. I'd go ahead and remove the shrink wrap and give it a good looking over.

I am not so sure I know how to do that... Can you explain how?

I have not found any burnt element or loose items yet... I however saw a little dent in the back of one capacitor, not sure if this will be causing the trouble.. I think this happened during the crash too, not sure though... You can see the images below..

Hi Joe Ling, All both jumpers are still solid... I can't see any crack or broken solder on the board... Sorry for the bad photos though...

Do you think the little dent in the CAP can cause the BK act up?

Hi tc3_racer_001,

I think I can change them, I'll see if the electronics stores have any that may be suitable for the repair...

Hmm... With that said... What would be a suitable replacement?

Hey tc3_racer_001

The caps did not change anything... Do you or Anyone else have any ideas? I don't want to just loose the controller...
