Metal or Plastic center diff spur gear? - 09.02.2008, 10:36 AM

What do you use? Metal or Plastic center diff spur gear? I had a kyosho plastic center diff gear and I destroyed this weekend and I had run maybe 4 packs through it.. I might have had it a little tight but I was thinking about switching to a metal gear and see if I get better life out of wide metal spur gears...

IMO if everything is set up right a plastic spur is fine but if you do use a metal spur you will need to use a hardened pinion gear

I use a metal spur with a hardend pinion. I had plastic spurs before but they strip too easily as I use motor brake.

I use plastic spur in my buggy on 4s, my Muggy on 6s is to hard on the plastic ones so I use the wide metal ones for it.

Metal on metal for me. I never had that great of luck with the Kyosho spurs TBH. And my buggy is actually pretty damn quiet with metal-to-metal, although the CRT.5 is a different story...

I am thinking about trying one of wide metal ones for my 8ight-T.. I am using motor brakes and was racing this weekend when stripped a plastic one.. I am running a 1515 2.5 on 5S, The first couple of races it was stupid fast then I turned it down a little to make actually drivable so that may have helped in stripping it..

With the hardened pinions there is no reason at all too run the plastic gear. The bearing fits sloppy on the plastic gear. The o ring area on the inside deforms and the gear would always loosen up enough to sling out the diff fluid. Small pieces of dirt and rock would embed them self into the plastic and make intermittent noises. Since I went to the steel gear I have had zero problems.

I use the stock narrow metal spur and have zero problems. Kyosho plastic was a kludge at best, didn't take long to break that one.

I went this route on my CRT. It is a good way to go, but one thing I had to do though was use the Losi outdrive and losi o-ring on the spur side because they are slightly different than the Jammin parts and they would leak and make a big mess.

I use plastic spurs on my buggies. They work ok. I think I my change to metal in the future.

Anybody have an RRP extra wide spur for the 8ight? If so, which direction is it wider in? In the front of the spur or the rear?

Looks like it is wider to the diff cup side. I have not put it in yet, wearing out the last losi 48t spur(won't be long).

I have been running the Kyosho plastic spur in my buggy for a few months now with no problems.

I have the stock metal one in my truggy no trouble there either. It's louder but that's it.

i think it depends on the car.ive never damaged my plastic spur on my xt8 inspite of very hard crashes(even bended cvd's)
but i used up 4 plastic spurs on my cen arena so i got rrp spurs for it

I've never had a problem with the plastic gears either. Only if the motor slipped and mesh got real loose... then you will strip a gear. But even then, it's only $5.00

Running metal gears isn't so bad now that we have good pinions for $10-15

Not long ago, it's was very costly to run metal-metal. I've run plastic for several years now.... racing and bashing... works for me and it's quiet.
