Running the Techno Kit...

Will I need to lock the clutch or get a faster engaging one?

I did a test with a 3S LiPo and it took everything to get it to engage...plus no speed.

Will probably lock in 2nd...but not sure of the clutchbell deal.

4s is really a minimum for such a setup. The slayer is a revo 2.5 with shorter arms and a bit smaller tire. The smaller tires will help lower the load on everything but what you have is still pretty much a MT. I'm pretty sure that most people will agree that it's going to take a min. of 4s to get any performance with this.

Info about the motor and esc and battery would be helpful...

It has small tires, and is not as heavy as a revo. I would consider the load to be similar to and 8th buggy, and some run that with a 3s setup. If you are going for track speeds of 35mph or less and are using a high qual motor and battery it should be fine. A feigao/maxamps setup will not be fine, where a neu/enerland will work. $s will yeild better temps though.

I plan to run mine with a c50 l can and a 5s 3700 pack... Or maybe 4s...

Yeah, if kept light, I can see a 1512 to be a good match. If running 4s, I'd go with the 2.5d. I wouldn't really run 3s unless there was a good reason to - the extra weight of 1 lipo cell is negligible for what you gain with the higher voltage. 5s would be an option on 3d or 1.5y. If using 4s or above, a maxamps 5Ah or better pack is what I would choose. But of course, there are different battery options (and I'm gonna stop right there).

Have to disagree with you Brian, the maxamps 5ah packs are useless for 4s, and marginal for 5s with a 1512. I ran the equivalent aveox motor (2000kv 1512 size) with a quark 80amp esc and a 5s 5ah maxamps pack could barely keep up. This was in a revo, but it still had the 2 speed and mech brakes. I threw in a well used polyrc 3700 25c 5s pack and the truck ran considerably better, more punch and about the same runtime. Those 5k packs are 12-15c at best... I had a pair of the maxamps packs and neither was any better. I also tried to run a 7xl on a pair of 5k 2s packs in series and they could not keep up. But a pair of trakpower 4900 2s packs worked just fine.

Not trying to be difficult, but I would hate to see anyone waste money on crap lipos....

I've had no problems running my two 2s 5Ah Maxamps lipos in my fairly heavy Hyper8 while waiting for my 8Ah packs to charge. I'm sure there are better bang-for-the-buck packs out there, I just think 4s 5Ah Maxamps packs would technically work, that's all.

Yeah, the true ratings are only 50a cont, and 75a burst, IIRC.

I am sure the high-revving, lower geared neu is not hurting your success with the maxamps packs. You may also have a better matched assortment of maxamps cells. My 5s packs would go way out of balance, had to limit my runtimes so that the packs would balance out during a charge. I got so sick of 3-4hr charges with tons of balancing. Glad you are having success with them though!

On a side note it once took me 37hrs of .5 amps charging to get a brand new maxamps 10k 3s pack into balance. If I charged it anymore than that the balancer would interrrupt the charge. Factory matched cells my ass!!!

Yep, and after that the pack would stay decently balanced. I was running it in a pede, so the draw was not too much. Glad I sold that stuff...

3 of my 4 600mah packs went way out of balance 2 weeks ago, eos0606i wouldn't do anything for them on it's own. Made a harness to connect from balance tap to main charge leads and did a 1A discharge on the cell with higher voltage and checked it every few minutes till it was close. Now I have a few more runs on them and they seem to be doing ok. Just running hot in the E-REVO battery compartments.

I had the world's funnest stampede setup in about an hour of work time.
1. Quick bike ride to LHS for deans plugs
2. Solder a series adapter
3. Find a way to mount dual 5s packs
6. Install align 600xl
7. Install the esc I've only used once, some Bidproduct esc
8. Turn it on
9. Full throttle. (repeat 12 times)
10. Watch 2 consecutive double standing backflips. OMG
11. See smoke coming from tranny
12. Remove tranny
13. Find that every plastic gear is melted
14. Remove all components.

I had a hell of alot of fun. Also measured a stock rustler tire at full throttle. 9" in diameter. Yes, both of them.

That is the best way to get a cell back up without excessive balancing. I wish the chargers would charge each cell individually, and vary the amp rate to get everything equal. I can only imagine the amount of circuitry required to do that, basically have a bunch of 1s chargers connected to a "brain"...

The problem is that the balance leads would have to be large enough gauge to handle 1c charging, which could easily be 6 amps... It would be a killer charger! And pricey...

I keep my little 5i hyperions to charge individual cells. If someone sends me a pack with bad cell(s) the other cells can often be well out of balance. I seperate all of the cells and charge them at .5-1 amp rates until they top off. If the cells are not puffed, but under 3v it often takes a few trys to get them to reach full capacity. Almost seems like they "false peak" (old nimh terms, HAHA) sometimes. Have to let them sit and stabilize. Slow charging with a low amp rate works best.

Yeah, way off topic now...

And to answer the original question, do you have the clutch shoes setup as traxxas recomends? Tekno says to flip them over, so the trailing edge engages first. That should make it engage faster. Or remove the spring altogether, but that may be too fast...

Quick note on the clutch here. Depending on the motor, 3s may be under the RPM range for the clutch to fully engage properly. Make sure you are in the neighborhood of 30K total RPM runout (voltage * kv) or faster and you should have no issues.
