I know everyone runs single speed or lock the tranny in second, and I know brushless motors have enough torque to run on a single speed. But I'd like to try out the extra efficiency from a 2 speed.
multi speed trannys were made to make up for weak power plants, we have had a few members here that have tried it just to see how it will turn out and in the long run they all removed them. Unless your goal is to pull wheelies and nothing else go with the 2 speed. With my first Revo conversion I actually went in the opposite direction I did the remove 1st gear, lock in 2nd mod, it still pulled wheelies, put in the wide ratio gear set, still pulling wheelies somewhat and geared up the pinion and spur to 38/18 and was happy with that...my latest is a slipperential Revo which I am the most pleased with

I get your point, and no I don't want wheelies all the time.
So I basically should be looking for a motor with lower torque than used in common setups using single speed tranny's?

Test Ok - 09.20.2008, 06:19 PM

Tomorrow i race with the MGM E serie TMM 28025-3 Car on a
truggy Eight T with NEU 1515 1.5 DF.
I went today for practice and it runs perfect. Even when grip
is low, wheelie on throtle-up is no problem.
I set the cut-off at 3.2v. After 2 hours rest, my pack gives
3.38v and i put back 5100 Mah on a 6000 pack ( Poly Rc ).
I run 17 min hard, up to the max slow down of the ESC.
The car was fine on this track with a standard setup.
By the way, it's the 1st time the T runs.
BUT, tomorrow is another day:
3 x 5 min qual + 3 x 15 min race.
My STRR truggy will race with an old MGM EXPERT+ 28025-3 and a
NEU 1515 2D. Smoother on gaz but not so thursty on packs.
I can run longer with a lower Kv.

Brushless: 2 truggies + 3 buggies
against 45 smoky....
Wait & seee

Running Perfect - 09.22.2008, 05:19 PM

The 2 truggies made the all races without any troubles.

STRR + old MGM made qualifications 5:3:1
The 15 min finals were with starting position B4
Ended 4 + 1 ( 3rd canceled due to the dark )

eIGHT T with MGM E serie made qualifications 5:2:4
Starting final A9 and made 5+4.

No doubt that the MGM are strong. The track was very slippy
on 1 side and a lot of grip on both side. It's always U turns
with brake max + nearly full throttle with wheeling sometimes.
The packs were just to hold the 15 min but this track needs energy.

By the way, all 3 other brushless ( not Neu & not MGM ) didn't end
a qual or final without thermalling.......

Total with MGM: 8 races + many practice = +/- 12 hours run.
No fan breakage and no troubles:
DO YOU KNOW WHAT? I'AM HAPPY.

What model do you have and what are the problems?
The version Nr of the controller is on the sticker and can be seen
on the computer screen as well.

I have the 16024 with 3.13 firmware. It just decided to smoke on me running 6s1P A123 cells.

TRUGGYMAN,

Nice to hear your MGM's are doing well.

My 16024 (now ver. 3.23) has 20 - 30 hrs and runs great, I may have to pick up one of the new ones soon.

That's very strange. Maybe a shorted FET somehow? 6s A123 is nowhere near the max voltage so there's no way it could've been over-powered.

3.13 Ver is quite old. I would ask for the latest update allowing the later
downloading of new version.
Do not forget to buy the USB com++ & the cable CC_O3.

By the way, all my connections are done with connectors MP JET 6mm.
They are hard to pull but never got loose or warm.

Just wanted to add my ongoing experience with the MGM controllers.

I don't know if it is OK to post links to other forums but my entire ordeal is posted in detail with pics on the Traxxas E-Revo forum.

Back in July I bought an MGM 16018 from mike along with a 1515 2D for my new E-Revo. The ESC went up in smoke after a total of maybe 15 minutes run time (3 5 minute sessions). I had not even done any full throttle runs, I was still breaking in the motor.

The original esc burnt on July 21'st. I finally received my replacement controller (a 28025 instead but I did of course pay the cost difference) on Sept 20th. 6 of the 8 screws that hold the heat sink's in place were loose. I sent pics to MGM and was told to carefully tighten them. The first one I tried to turn broke. Yesterday I sent it back the MGM. They did say they would ship me a replacement immediately instead of waiting to receive this one back.

I am very disappointed with the MGM customer service. I know there is a big time difference and it takes a day to respond but I had to wait days for responses sometimes and had to call them on my dime 3 times to get responses.

I wont be buying any more of their products. In fact I will probably sell the replacement controller when I receive it as my car is up and running (for the moment) on another controller.

As a side note, Mike has been very supportive during this whole process and I have no gripes with RC-Monster at all. I am happy with his customer service and will buy from him again.

Screws - 09.25.2008, 02:45 PM

Being a driver is 1 thing. I'm more a modelist.
All what i have in my hands is check and made better if needed.
Concerning the screws, when i got the ESC from MGM, i took
away the 2 fans and put some thread lock on the 2X4 screws holding
the heat sink's. Afterward, i mount 2 grill in front of the fans, taking
care that the grill is away from the fans. An "O" ring makes the job.
The screws for fans & grills are locked by yellow paint.( see picture ).
Glue the connecting tap of the fan cables and check that the cables
are not trapped with the heat sink's.
The esc mounting on rubber damper helps a lot.
All my loose cables are protected by plastic coils ( Don't know the name
of this beautifull accessories )

Regarding the smoking of the esc, do not forget to set all parameters
before starting driving. A bad Battery choice would probably destroy
it.

Having a mail answer is already a very good point. You want it quick,
everybody does, but having a positive answer is THE POINT needed.
Many do not answer at all. You would be totally upset if so

Just my experience.

Too bad only the 6S models. Would be very interested in a 10S or 15S model if he would stock them. His prices are much better than ordering directly through MGM.

Send Mike a PM and see if he can put the one you want on his next order. He should do it for you.
