Polyquest 25c vs 30c - 10.12.2008, 04:53 PM

Got a question for the polyquest lipo users here.

I have a pair of 3s 4500 30c polyquest packs that I bought for my LST. I run them in sereis for 6s.

With a hacker c50 11xl and gearing for around 43mph, the lipos get a bit hot after a run, like 12f and sometimes over 130f in places on the pack. Motor is getting to around 160f, and the MMM does not get warm as it has the fan on all the time.

Was wondering if I went to a pair of 6000 25c 3s polyquest lipos would it be better?

I have read that the 25c packs hold voltage better than the 30c packs, and the 6000 25c is capable (according to specs) of a higher discharge rate, 150amps vs 135amps cont for the 30c pack.

Now, I am looking for someone who has ran both (maybe asking too much) or at least someone who has some experience with either.

I plan to swap the hacker 11xl for a 1521 2y (similar kv but a bit longer). I may drop my gearing (2 teeth on the pinion) and see if temps improve. I really like the setup as it is, but do not want to cook the lipos. Not sure if the neu will be more effecient than the hacker, but it is a bigger motor and I expect that it will draw a bit more from the lipos.

I plan to swap the 11xl into an erevo and run it with the 4500 30c lipos, as the truck is lighter it should not work the batts so hard as the lst.

I both a 4500 30C pack and a 6000 25c pack for my truggy. Performance wise I cant really tell a difference in either punch or pack temps. Ususally bith are comming off a long run around 110F. The 6000 just run a bit longer. If the 4500's work then the 6000 should be fine also.

BTW: I am using them in 5s configuration , but the cell comparision should still be valid even if you are using them in 6s config.

I can't decide if its more fun

Ok, but do you think there will be any benefit going to the 6000 from the 4500? I feel my setup must be near the 4500 max due to the temps. I guess that I should drop gearing a bit and see if that helps any.

Well the 6000 have a slightly higher discharge capability according to the specs and the run time will obviously be longer. all this you know.

Even if you are on the edge of the packs capability, what options are there for better packs? None come to mind at the moment.

All I can do is run a pair of 3700 6s packs in parallel, but that is getting big and heavy, and will most likely not fit my battery area. I could go down to a pair of 3300 6s packs in parallel, but would like something more versatile.

I will try gearing down a bit and see what that does. New 6000 3s packs are 120 each, and I would rather put the money towards a mill/lathe...

hey link i was told by one of the tech at castle who races that they found the new 30c pack didnt make the claimed discharge rate UNTIL they were at what he called operating temperature of 125-130 degrees, he said they did not like this and have switched back to the 25c pack for lower temps and better piece of mind, because the packs were already running 125-130 anything go wrong and all the the pack could get to hot really quick, they thought that with the 25c packs there is a much bigger window of safe temps.

That would make sense of what I am seeing. The packs come out of the truck pretty hot, but they are not puffed, or soft at all. I let them cool off and they take a charge fine, and are not out of balance much. The two packs are hotter on the sides they touch though, and that is what causes me some concern. I will give them a try in the 2nd erevo that I am currently building. Maybe they will be ok in the lighter truck?
