Moding a Walmart "ride-on"?? (battery powered trucks for little kids) - 11.09.2005, 10:52 PM

Hi! New here. Guy on the UE boards sent me over here.
Heres my question.

My little brother and sister both have little trucks kind of like this one.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...%3A4198%3A5353

They never play with them anymore, so I was thinking of trying to mod one. I'm really not sure what I could do to it, I haven't even really look it over yet. But I know I'd like to make it faster, but I don't know what kind of engine I could use, or battery.
I was thinking of maybe adding some rubber to the tires for better grip, but I think that would run the battery down real fast.
And I don't think I can make it much lighter.

Anyone have an Idea? I'm sure someone here knows something about electric motors.

Maybe once I do this they'll start using them again, They've been sitting for about a year.

Now. I've been told these use the same size motor as we use in RC. Could you tell me what would be a good size to use, or just what motor would do the job. and please give a link.

Is there anything else that I would need? other then the motor? like better batteries, or something?

Thanks.:D

Hush

Welcome to the forums. Here is another thread on converting Power Wheels . If there is a group of people that can help you get this done, this is the place. Good luck, and have fun!

Yeah, welcome to the Forum!

I'm sure this is doable. At least you'll have plenty of room for cells ;)

How about a dual Lehner 22 setup? But you better get some seat-belts:D

Do you need dual motors or a single? A lehner 3080 would push the truck around pretty good. may need helmets though for kids.
Welcome to the forum there hush.

Peace!

I am certain my sons Tonka power wheels has dual 540 Mabuchi brushed motors. It receives power from a single 6 volt cell, and it looks like a mechanical speed control. Each wheel is driven and geared individualy.

For experimental puposes, wiring in a second six volt cell in series may give you an inexpensive boost in power. Although, I am uncertain if the Speed control could manage the added voltage.

For Example: The neighbor kid has a Harley Power wheels it has two 6volts and one 540 can. It is faster in speed runs. However, that thing will wheelie from a start at full wood in first gear. My kid has to wear his bike helmet. The other day they roped the two together for a pull off. The Tonka beat the Harley. Of course my kid is about 20 lbs. heavier and was able to put the power to the sidewalk with a little more authority. The other boys wheels just spun.
:L:

I'll take another peak at the both after school today, in the name of science of course.

Don't mention Tonka trucks to Serum. He tends to get "nostalgic"

you didn't even put a nick in the paint. Did you play with it?
If it runs the 540 can motors. and only runs 12 volts. can you put like a evx in it. Or one of them shulze with the 3oo amp compacity for brushed.

Peace!
