I made a batt tray for my trug, and the zippies I use have a side wire. I notched the tray making sure the batt was oriented so the wires would be in back, and towards the top of the pack.
That way the notch was minimally deep as well in a spot where the battery is not likely to hit the tray the hardest. IOW, most crashes are frontal, the front batt walls will take the most abuse. Lastly, put some foam in both ends to cushion the blow and distrubute the load. Never had a prob w/ my trays.
