1515 Neu mount bolt spacing

G'day,

First up, I did a number of searches on the forum as well as searching the Neu website and did not find the info I found out the hard way.

I bought a 1515/2Y/S to go into my Savage using a FLM motor mount in an otherwise std X SS kit and found it would not fit. The reason was because the smooth can 1515 has a mounting bolt spacing of 22mm and the FLM mount is machined for 25mm and not able to be modified to fit the smooth can Neu. The finned can 1515 Neu has a bolt spacing of 25mm.

I have emailed my supplier to exchange my smooth can for a finned can motor and am sure, other than a possible wait depending on stock, won't be a problem other than the extra cost to me in freighting the smooth can back.

I have found no mention of this difference anywhere in the forums or on the Neu website or any other site selling the Neu motors.

This is sort of a whinge on my part but I really did not think there was any difference to the finned and smooth can Neu motors other than the outside diameter. Maybe other motor mounts are more adaptable and others have not had this problem.

It looks like I will get my Medusa 70mm motor now before I can get a Neu setup in the Savage. The Neu purchase was made partly due to the long wait for the Medusa (as well as me delaying another purchase I was going to make).

The 1515 2Y is only an 1100kv motor. I just checked Castle's website and the the 1515 2Y is indicated as being "Air-Geared: F3A-120 size" So I guess there is your answer why the bolt pattern is different.

This is news to me...I was relatively certain that all Neu 15XX series motors had the same bolt pattern/spacing?!?!?! I have had a 1509 smooth can and several smooth and finned can 1515 motors and all have worked fine for me...but then again I never looked into buying the 2Y.

Most folks in here stay stay in the range of 1500-2700kv when using Neu motors...depending on vehicle weight, gearing, # of cells, etc. What kind of batteries and gearing were you planning to use with the 1515 2Y?

I have a 1515/2Y in a plane and it has 25mm spacing. All Neu 15xx series have 25mm spacing. Either it's not a genuine Neu or it is some custom made special.

I have been talking this over with the Australian Neu distributor after initially looking at the 1.5Y and 2.5D. I plan on using 6S to start with and looking to go 8S or 10S in the future. I have Polyquest 4500 30C X2 to start with.
Gearing has not been sorted yet but he said I can gear it up a lot over the other 2 motors and use the torque and stay cool.

The paperwork listing specs and instructions that came with the motor has a table with the 1Y, 2.5D, 1.5Y, 3D and 2Y all listed with only one set of drawings I assumed to be for all of them. It states 22mm smooth case and 25mm finned case. It also has the dimensions for the gearbox and the picture shows a finned motor with a gearbox attached. The document says Neu Motors distributed by Diversity Model Aircraft (USA based) and that al warranty is handled by them too. Maybe some are made for specific applications differently.

The company I bought it from mostly deal with boats and aircraft. They have already replied to my emails and are going to fix it for me but I will have delays due to Xmas.

Has anyone else got the paperwork that comes with the motor to check?

Option 2 - I think mike has or can easily make an end bell coverter to go from 22 to 25mm spacing...

Ah, you have the old series motors. Diversity Models was kicked to the curb as a Neu distrubutor a long while ago. The current drawings from Neu's site all have 25mm spacing for the 15 series.

Yes, you got one of the original versions. Same thing happened to me about three years ago, except the drawings had 25mm on them and they were made incorrectly.

Thanks guys, that sorts out the why. I will be shipping it back to the distributor to get an exchange for a finned one he has that was waiting for a new gearbox to go into a plane but they have decided to use a different motor in the plane. That way I will have a std spacing motor if I want to use it elsewhere.
