What is a Slipperential?

I have a question though, What Is the main purpose of the slipperential. Is it just to releive stress on the motor/driveline?

I may be wrong, but the way I see it is that it limits power to the wheels(clutch slipping). But, (lets say your racing) Shouldnt you be able to use a smooth trigger finger/esc settings to accomplish the same thing. What am I missing?
