mud bogger? 10th or 8th scale? new to this whole thing - RC-Monster Forums

i have some experience with buggies, emaxx, drifters. i think i was to attempt a mud slinger or bogger. no 8th scales? only 10th? what would i need to look for as a cheap, first timer chassis, etc. i dont think my Medusa 2300 would do good for this so i guess i need motor too. what size? just a titan 550 maybe? i could pick several of those up for pretty cheap. anyways, i have no idea what i am looking for and i want some help

what i want needs to be waterproof. this is a defiant.. i would like to end up with some sort of scale look but this isnt needed at first. just a decently painted f350 body and some big mud slinging tires. i would be content with that. i have a Spectrum DS2 and a Futuba 3PM FM system. maybe i can tie the receiver up in a bag and seal it? still need an ESC and servo.

who wants to start with some tips..

Maybe this vid will give you some ideas...it's not mud, but sand.

Do you want to just plow through water and deep mud or skate across the top of it?

would like to go through it somewhat slowly, then hit whoot and sling mud everywhere when i get pissed i am stuck. lol. but i would like to go through some water in my neighborhood, sand at beach. but i also dont want to be limited to 5mph... if all this makes sense then good. if not. i am looking for a transformer. slow mud bogger / dancing on the mudd. :)

oh and i am on Florida and we get alot of rain down here and there is always construction sites. so this would be a nice addition to my collection

Sounds like you'd be happiest with something like a trail truck with a decent powered system in it and some scale-ish mud tires.

I'd suggest taking a look perhaps an Axial SCX10 as a base vehicle, then swapping out the tires, wheels and body for some 2.2wheels with Imex Swamp Dawgs and body of your choice.

thats more like it. thanks... i think i am going to look for a roller or something. no need in spending money on things i wont need though. body ,tires, wheels, etc. dont need any of that .

if i cant find a roller for this, what other chassis would be good?

That's the only truck on the market like that. Most everything else you'd need to piece together with various parts. Also, it's pretty new (maybe 2 months old), so it won't be easy finding a used roller.

what do you mean, piece together? like buy and put together from online stores or whatever or "make" it fit. you lost me there. i dont want to spend too much on this.

Piece together, as in, you'll need to buy axles, tranny, chassis, etc. separately. The SCX10 is the only complete truck of it's kind on the market right now. If you want something similar, you'll have to buy parts from various vendors to build it yourself. The SCX10 probably is the cheapest option for that style truck.

The only alternative I'd even recommend looking into is a Wheely King. It's not nearly the same truck, but it is cheaper and can be modded a bit to get it more scale looking.

as far as getting the parts from different vendors and putting it together myself, i wouldnt mind that at all. would help me learn more during the process too. but would i end up spending more or less money. you said cheapest option for that style, is that comparing to building it or in general? how much you think i could get it all for if i built it??

after watching this, i think it might be all i want. nothing crazy, just something i can get wet and muddy. this is waterproof i would imagine, what is needed to make it this way?

A wheely king is actually a bit larger than the axial scale truck. You can get those trucks (WK) really cheap used and can make them into a decent mud vehicle. Plus the motor is positioned up high so it will last longer. My next waterproof build will use a WK tranny and a set of tamiya tlt axles on a reign frame. Some crt.5 front shocks and most likely pede or jato driveshafts. This is the mix and match approach, not as easy to do as just buying a roller. Other than the WK, not really much cheap that you can pick up. You will want to stretch the links a bit, but hpi and others do sell a kit.

Buy a good waterproof esc, or put everything is a good tuperware with locking sides. I like the tuperware method, as you can get the battery, rec, and esc in there and have very few wires coming out of the box.

I'd say it's going to be much more expensive to put it together from other parts than to buy the SCX10 kit itself.

If you want to waterproof it, there are a bunch of threads over on rccrawler.com with tips and tricks for the electronics. You may also want to look into the waterproof electronics from a Traxxas vehicle. You should be able to pick them up pretty cheap on eBay.
