Neu LiPo vs. Maxamps 5000mAh packs -
03.27.2008, 11:31 PM
For a while now I have been using the Maxamps 5000mAh packs in my CRT.5 (3S - 1930/6) and XB8EC (4S - 1512/2.5d). A lot of people bash the MaxAmps packs for the Neu and FlightPower packs, but it's also been noted multiple times that the 5000mAh cells are the best ones MaxAmps has.
I've had no problems with the MaxAmps 5000mAh cell packs and they do maintain pretty decent voltage under load.
Having heard everyone talk about how impressed with the Neu packs when thy get one, I was wondering if I could get some opinions from people with experience with the Neu pack if they think I would see an appreciable difference by trying a 4S Neu pac instead of the MaxAmps pack.
Due to the size of my battery tray (Mike made me one which is an exact fit for the MaxAmps 5000mAh packs for the XB8EC) my choice of Neu pack it limited. It looks like I can get a Neu3300EP or Neu4100EP (30/60C) or a Neu3900XP (25/50C) 4S pack.
The price for any of these 4S Neu packs is less that the MaxAmps 4S 5000mAh pack - guess I am looking for someone here to let me know that I'll be able to feel the difference in punch with one of the Neu packs.

I noticed a big difference, went from MA 5000 4s to Neu 4300 4s. Get the 4100, you won't loose as much run time.

Go with a flightpower 4900 4s 25c lipo. Those are the same cells that are in the trakpower packs. They should fit the same tray that a 5k maxamps pack fits.
I have about 4 different setups that I used to run maxamps 5k packs in. I had a pair of 2s and 3s packs. I bought a pair of trakpower lipos to replace the pair of 2s 5k packs. I run 7xl feigao motors in a variey of MTs. The 5k packs could not keep up, and just did not have the punch I wanted. After using the trakpower packs there is a night and day difference. If the trakpower are 25c, then the maxamps 5k packs are 15c at best. They just do not hold voltage under load like the trakpower packs.
All flightpower, neuenergy, polyrc and polyquest use enerland cells. I have a polyrc 3700 5s packs that I bought used. It has about 25 cycles on it. It easily out did my maxamps 5s 5k pack (a 2s and 3s in series) in my revo. Longer runtimes, much more punch and top speed. There is no comparision. I have owned almost very pack that maxmps sells, and the 2100 are the only cells I have left.
Considering that maxamps have raised their prices, there is no point to buy them anymore. I cannot stress how much better the enerland cell based packs are. Just buy one and you will see!
I spoke directly with a flightpower rep, and he told me khow they match their cells when they build packs. I can honestly say that no matter how hard I push my packs they do not go out of balance, ever. I had to check my v balancer on a maxamps pack to make sure it was working, as the other packs would not light up any of the single cells when charging thru the balancer, even at 1c.
I currently have these enerland cell based packs:
(1) polyrc 3700 25c 5s
(2) flightpower 2170 25c 3s packs
(1) neuenergy 5000 25c 3s pack
(2) trakpower hard cased 4900 25c 2s packs
(2) poly rc 3600 12c 4s packs (even these packs can outdo the 4k maxamps packs, so they must be good)
I intend to buy a pair of 3700 25c 4s flightpower packs to run in series for my larger HV projects.
Given the current prices there is no pint to buy anything else.

The neu 4900 are longer than the maxamps 5000, same length as the 4300 which I have.

The flightpower will fit, they are 143mm long, which is about the same as the maxamps packs, and they will fit a std 6cell nimh tray, like an emaxx tray (old style).

Thx guys - just the feedback I was looking for. I'll check out the flightpower and polyrc packs for sizing before placing any orders, but checking out prices it seems that the Neus are very reasonable - expecially compared to the now higher prices of the Maxamps pack.

Anyone have any eagletree data? I was out with 6s (2x3s and a Y harness), 20C, 5000 mAh maxamps batts today in my MGM 16018 / Neu 1521/1Y maxx. I was surprised to see that I was only able to draw about 1000 watts (~50 amps at 20V, which is about 3.3 V/cell under load).
The good news is that I started checking the setup and discovered a really, really bad solder joint in my homemade deans Y-harness (here's to the do-it-yourselfer working with 12GA wire and lots of deans connectors :). I'm going to patch that up and measure the difference. After that though I'm going to switch to a pair of thunderpower 3s, 25C, 5000mAh packs - I believe those are the enerland cells based on the (bigger) size compared to the maxamps.
I'll post the graphs up asap (damn that day job), but was really hoping some others would have comparable data to share for comparison / reference. (not necessarily just for the batteries, but 1521 vs. 1515, etc.). It'll be fun to sort all this out.

Neu make good packs, I have dealt with Neu directly and can say nothing bad about their service. Seems like a good deal for 219 bucks.

Google is your friend.
Seems like our friend SpeedAssault is very concerned about getting a good lipo... Can't blame him.

They seem to be comparable. Build quality and general cq are not as good, so you may have issues, or you may not...
Seems like the hold voltage well under load, and only start to go out of balance near the 3v per cell mark. So a higher lvc setting may help.
