The motor that ROAR approved was poorly designed, performed horribly, generated very very little torque, had huge inductance, a rotor that was WAY too small, and a backiron design that ran in saturation ALL THE TIME.
Does this mean that any motor that says ROAR approved design suffers from these traits ?

Despite the price difference, I think I talked myself into the RX8 combo last night. I have an MGM ESC in my onroad Hyper, a Castle ESC in my A/T Muggy, so why not test out a Tekin ESC in my offroad Hyper? I really like the Castle combos, but something really makes me want to test out the Tekin setup.

Good luck and I don't think you can a wrong choice between the two. I am sure you will be thoroughly pleased with it as Tekin makes fantastic products.

I'm sure neither is a wrong choice, it's just more tempting to experience the RX8 and have something totally new than buy something that I already know is great

well, I just received my RX8 combo from Mike (THANKS!!!), I'll try and put out my opinions after next week sunday. Prior to this, I was running the MMM/1.5D combo. Let's see how the RX8/2650 combo works.

Should be interesting, too...the X1-CRT will be going head to head with three other truggies...two X1s and one X2. ALL of them are running the Novarossi Hollinger Edition motors.

should be interesting to say the least. I had a blast with the MMM/NEU combo, but now it's time to try something different. I'll be sure to let you guys know how it went.

I'll try to see if I can take pictures, too.

agreeed! only thing left is, where the hell can I buy one? Combo is nowhere in the world and I want to try that new toy .... and after reading all threads I was able to find, I am not 100% sure that RX8 will be worth extra money, but I am 100% sure that I am going to try it

I'm waiting for them to come in stock at my LHS, they've got one or two on back order. The Buggy I'm putting it in is a works-in-progress and every other one of my RCs is broken right now so it'll be a while before I get back to work on it. RX8 should be available by the time I actually need it.

just a little snippet:

got all my soldering done for the RX8, can't believe I ran out of solder for the motor wires. not too sure how that happened.

ennyhoo, had enough solder to do the wires on the RX8. I don't know why Tekin recommends a dinky 4mm connector...that don't make any sense to me. On top of that, there were no connectors supplied. I mean, it's probably just a tiny little gripe, but I would think that for the amount of money we spend on a combo they would have at least humored me with some connectors. Meh...that's just me, though. I used the CC 6.5mm connectors instead.

Since I couldn't run the 2650, I just hooked the RX8 up to the trusty 'ol 1.5D. Strapped in a NeuEnergy 3S and away we went.

I did not fiddle with ANY of the settings on the RX8. Plugged it into my HotWire, but it wasn't able to pull it up. Odd...guess I'll look into later on.

And so...what happened?

damnit. Got logged off while typing. Anyways, here's what happened:

Well, the truggy tried to take off like a bat out of hell. At least, that's what the throttle trigger was telling me. It cogged a little bit, and then hesitated for just a little bit more. Hmm...seems the same as the MMM in that regard.

Took it out on the street (mind you this was around 2am), no body, and let her rip. Was pleasantly suprised by the power wheelie I observed. Truggy was geared with stock center spur, 11T pinion. Don't have a data logger, but from what I saw on the speed and power, it appeared that the RX8 might be a tad down on the power department compared to the MMM, but I remembered that I didn't have a chance to goof around with the settings on the RX8. I don't know if messing with the throttle curves will make up for that much, but we'll hafta see. From what it looks like, the MMM may have an edge in that department. Throttle delivery appeared to be the same...a linear profile.

So, after running on the street for a good 10mins at full tilt, I brought her in for my tried-and-true temperture check by hand.

Motor was only starting to get warm (I'd venture around 100deg), the RX8 only had 2 LEDS lighting up (I didn't install the fan, either), and the battery was cooler than the motor. Not too bad, RX8...not too bad.

I'm going to try to get the Hotwire to detect it again (do I need an update for it?) and see if I can play with the settings. Sunday will be the big day...we'll see how the RX8 performs in a race setting.

Just thought I'd share a little preview with y'all.
