My mgm224/18 controller is behaving strangely lately!!! -
05.11.2009, 02:09 AM
My mgm224/18 controller is behaving strangely lately. I set it on one-directional car mode with second to hardest brake setting. I'm running e-revo with NEU1515/1Y motor on 6S lipol (25.2V). It has worked perfectly so far (except for heat issue (temperature at about 160 degree F while motor is at 140 degree F)). But, recently, it behaves strangely when I apply full brake. This doesn't happen all the time but I'm still worried... it just started last weekends like couple of times for 100 times braking.
Okay, here it goes. When I apply full brake, it stops. To make sure it comes to a complete stop, I applied full brake again, and all of a sudden, it went backwards at full force doing backwards backflipping. And like I said, I set my car to be unidirectional (reverse going is not allowed~!!!). After that incident, I carefully drove the car again and it seems to be working fine....
This is certainly not normal, is it? I asked Grisa from MGM if it's ok and their recommendation was that since motor works as generator during braking, Voltage may go up as high as 40 V and that if I want to apply hard braking on 6S running I might as well buy controller that can handle upto 8s lipo voltage(which I think is ridiculous since if such being the case, they shouldn't have advertized that it can handle 6S lipo). Another alternative suggestion from MGM was to use soft braking which I might try afterwards...
Like I said, esc seems to be still functional but I'm still worried that this might happen again and hurt my kid or even explode!! Any advice?

Hey, thanks for the replies. My version is 3.22. I know that latest version is 3.23 but I can't upgrade my ESC to 3.23 because I don't have cc cable nor USB Com+. I also heard that it is not easy to upgrade MGM ESC.... Is it worth-while investment? If so, I will buy them and upgrade it to 3.23 because I heard from Grisa of MGM that 3.23. version has some changes for better braking behaviours. Thank you!~

All braking issues were gone in my 16024 after update to version 3.23. I had similar problem to yours with earlier versions.

Thanks! That's a relief. Anyway, what do I need to upgrade my 224/18 (3.22 version)? Some say that cc_02 cable is needed to connected older MGM(and that cc_03 are for newer E or Z version) but others say that cc_03 and USBCOM+(version 3) is that I need.
And sometimes, they say USBCOM++ is needed....(which I can locate on the market) I'm confused...

cc_o3 cable and USBcom version 3.0 or higher. I think the ++ will work as well. You could email MGM for confimation.

Hey, it turned out that I already have upgraded(3.23) MGM. And I figured what is causing problem. When my car is on slanted surface and ran backwards because of the gravity I applied brakes to stop it from rolling reverse direction. and all of a sudden it ran backwards.
I guess reverse rotating is causing some confusion in controller causing it to go in reverse directino. Well... I guess I will just not apply break if the car rolls backwards.
