Started it... another Baja5e

Well, after reading another thread, and looking over the spare parts bins...

Here goes.

I used a T-maxx chassis for temporary mock-up purposes. Most everything else came from the spare parts bin, other than the Razor scooter chassis. I'll be busting out the dremel for some steering clearance and tranny setup. The tranny will be dropped down in the frame so that if I ever wanted to, I could run a long dogbone for 4wd. For now, it's going to stay 2wd.

Any help on what motor and battery would be great, I don't have that lying around here.

I have ordered some Rib Dawg's for the front, I'm still deciding bewteen paddles or mulchers on the rear.







We'll see where this goes from here, time to go to work.

Looks great sofar. Go with the mulchers on the rear. Very cool idea with the scooter chassis!

I like the scooter chassis too, but I would have attached it to the skids, not the bulks for a lower cg setup...

..just ouot of interest, what tranny / diff will you be using? Whats the axle to axle length in mm's?

Another super stretch chassis, very cool. I'm not sure what you have planned, but I'd make a piece of alum to tie the front and rear skids to the chassis to reduce the stress on the bulkheads. And I'd mount the batts to the underside of the chassis, being that long it needs the lowest cg you can get. Mine is actually on hold until I lower my batts, hopefully then I won't 2 wheel in turns on the street and grass. Can't wait to see more, good job.

Not a Baja by a long shot, but still cool to see more large scale RCs coming. You'll have a hard time getting a Traxxas diff to handle that much strain, I'd look into a real Baja transmission and some Mod 1.5 pinion gears for the motor. The Baja's transmission is 100x tougher than anything Traxxas makes.

So far I'm thinking about using the "hybrid" bulkhead for the rear, I know the stock diff won't hold up at all. It's only in there to get her up and running. An 1/8th scale diff should hold up fine for my use.

The batteries will be inside the chassis with the electronics mounted on top. I'm going to make it look like a Baja5b with the body, wing and roll cage. I put it up next to a HPI Baja and it's only about 1.5in longer wheelbase.

I'm not too worried about center of gravity right now, more worried about my hack-job I did on the chassis. I did get some skid plates mounted up to help with the bulkhead and steering stress.



Some RPM skid plates fit pretty well, I really need to go through my parts bin more often, stuff get's thrown in and never gets out.



HACK-JOB!!! I never said I was good with the wrong tools. A Roto-Zip is NOT a good replacement when the Dremel finally dies.



More hacking, but I'm going to buy a new Dremel on Friday. The shaft angle doesn't seem to bind, but still bothers me a little. I might have to lower the tranny more...



Not too bad, but with some power, the shaft will break... Maybe, if the diff doesn't first.

Those rpm skid plates look like they'll do the job. If you're worried about the diff just shim it to get rid of the play for now. Run the truck and have some fun, if you like it upgrade from there. If you keep some of the weight up front you shouldn't get enough tracion to break it your first time out anyway. Keep up the good work.
