There should be some standard and I think the mfg's you mentioned do follow this. However the problem comes in with these knock-off companies that make something that works ok and then bogus numbers fly. When I was boating heavily, their was a claim on a Hobbycity esc of 2-6s capable, but when questioned, they stated the ESC shouldn't be used on more than 4s applications....
