Hobbywing, why have you forsaken me? - 06.30.2009, 11:54 PM

i finally had enough money to get a real car/land esc for my savage. i had been running a $30 plane esc until it was damaged in a crash.

i bought the EZrun 150a esc after reading the great reviews. it came in the mail today and i went to my LHS to have everything soldered properly (my soldering skills are less than great) and i double checked and made sure everything was properly wired.

i plugged in one of my 3s lipos for a quick test run. it ran as expected with no glitches or cogging. i then plugged in my 2 3s packs in series and when i gave it a little burst of throttle, i thought i saw a small spark. i then gave it about 1/4 throttle and instantly, the esc sprayed black, and then red smoke and also broke all of the solder joints in my series connector. if those solder joints hadn't broken, the esc most likely would have caught fire and my lipos would have also been destroyed. they did get up to 120F though in that 20 seconds i had them plugged in.

well, there goes $100 down the drain

hobbywing, why have you forsaken me???

edit: i did not change any of the settings on the esc and i was running a KB45-12l motor

They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

Odd. Did you change any of the programming settings (IIRC, setting the timing to 0 causes issues)? What is the weight of the vehicle and what speed do you have it geared for on 6s?

it was geared for about 40-45mph (hadn't even gotten it to 2mph with that motor or esc)

the only setting changed was i turned the LVC off since i was using 3s lipo at first and i was keep a close eye on the pack voltages (i have one of those hobbycity meters)

the truck is around 13-14lb with the batteries.

edit: the hole where the smoke came out is in between the switch and fan/bec plugs.

Could be just a lemon. It shouldn't have done that, especially at the speed you were running at.

That area of the ESC is where some of the FETs are and the BEC. Of course, that doesn't mean that is where the problem actually is, it could simply be the easiest place for the smoke to escape. Where did you get it; here or somewhere else?

Look out for the swtich. My HW150A has a different switch from older hw150A. It has a bigger case and seems to be more durable. So perhaps my hw150A is the updated one. Any idea?
