Esc misfiring? -
08.28.2009, 04:41 PM
So I have a Mamba monster in a slash with an aveox motor geared for about 40mph on 4s lipo.. really conservative. timing set to 10 .. bear with me as i describe what its doing
You guys know at very low speed how the esc changes switching frequencies,
at the moment the frequency changes my esc loses time with the motor and just sits there and stutters.. if i give it more throttle it just kind of skips over that bit and continues on fine.
I dont think its cogging because the batteries are plenty powerful and it gets better the more I pull the trigger..
What is this and how do i remedy it?
Thanks,
Ben

Didnt you just get the ESC back from Castle? Did it do it before you sent it in or have you even ran the setup before?

it was in a different vehicle before. i dont think it will be that big of a problem. cuz im never really at that low of a throttle input :)
I was just curious.

my rc8 did this when i changed the timing to 10. temps were higher and power output seemed smoother overall. was running on small indoor clay track and outdoor medium size drytrack when i tested it. both tracks gave similar results. pretty much always run 0 and dont really notice a loss in top speed but the bottom end is snappy and motor is usually 10-20 deg cooler. same gearing and all just changed the timing to see how it worked. runnin a 1512 3d on 4&6s.

isnt that just the nature of sensorless design? all my cars seem to do that from standstill.

Weirdness... have you tried altering the throttle dead band setting (wider or narrower) to see if that helps or not?

it works at the lowest speed. but right as the drive frequency changes (as its moving) thats when it acts up..
dont think the deadband would help it.

in the past it was well known but these castle systems have come a hell of a long way...for me it's actually a challenge to make it cogg!!

seriously? I realise theyve come a long way, but in any of my cars if I start on real gentle with the throttle there is always the telltale signs of sensorless motor startup, I think it's unavoidable. I mean, you have to be looking for it, and trying to crawl at a snail pace, but it's there :p I thought that's what the op mightve been referring to.
