Converting a Savage X to BL; easy? - 09.13.2009, 07:44 AM

Instead of saving up for a flux and risking my mother killing me for spending more money on RC, I came over an idea of doing a conversion. (more fun)

A guy is selling a Savage X 4.1 truck for 130 euros, I'd dump the motor and slowly start putting stuff together. What kind of investment would I be looking at?

BL system
new diffs
motor and esc mount and other minor stuff

Anything else? I already have the batteries and other electric things from my brushless E-Revo.

Can you buy all the parts or are there things that you must do by yourself?

Does it come out cheaper than a flux at the end?

it can definitely be done. id say all you need is
Battery boxes #100908
HPI Idler Gear 44t/Shaft Set #100905 (converts your tranny to a single speed)
HPI Battery Box Mount/Cover Set #100909
Motor mount (three pieces)
20t pinion and 44t spur
2200kv motor
Blur esc
and chassis.

i think thats it. If you want you could also upgrade the diffs, and the diff cases. the flux has composite cases, and the bullet proof diffs that HPI just released are great. i just installed a set in my flux. you can also upgrade the shocks to the Aluminum or plastic big bores if you want the real deal flux but the 8 shock set up will work and save you money.

it all depends on how you do it. i converted my x 4.6 to brushless. there's a cheap way to do it and there's an expensive way. i went the cheap way, so i may be able to help you.

first of all, hobbycity.com is your friend. you can get lipos there for less than cheap ni-mh packs. the turnigy packs are great.

also, you can get a motor mount from kershawdesigns.com. the mount is only $20 which is a steal for what it is.

this esc/motor combo works great for the savage. the esc is good until 6s lipo, but the motor spins very fast and is only good up to 4s lipo. it shows that it costs $190, but it is $150 once you log in. that combo works well for savage and revo conversions. the esc is better than the MMM esc as long as you don't mind the esc's huge size and the fact that you have to be careful when programming it as 0 timing will fry it. if you leave it at stock setings, you have nothing to worry about.

those battery packs will work nicely. i used velcro to secure my lipos. that is the hardest part of the conversion and needs a little creativity.

They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

I converted my XL and its quite easy. For you, the easiest would be just buying the Flux parts, ie idler gear, TVPs and batt boxes &mounts.
Motor mount can be the KD above (i have this) or the flux mount.

I made my own batt boxes and esc mount. Batt boxes was by far the hardest part.

I won't go cheap on the BL system, Tekin or another Mamba. I already have Zippies and Turnigy packs. Do the X driveshafts hold up? It's nice that the bulletproof diffs fit since they're cheap. Can I use TCS' flux tvp's?

Good your not going cheap. the TCS chassis fits and i highly recommend them. 20 bucks and they are a great product. fit perfectly. i use them and love em.

well, if you are going to get a good motor/esc combo, i recommend the CC/NEU, MMM combo. the kershaw motor mount is perfect and is bulletproof. i don't think it'll work with the flux TVPs. you could get a TORK 2200kv (stock flux) motor and a MMM esc off ebay and use flux TVPs and motor mount.

Yep, fired her up the other day and just got frustrated. She's my last nitro.

Gas or BL now. :)
