Yes, that's true. The settings are stored in a flash block in the processor.
We always suggest that you save any settings files you wish keep prior to doing a software update, but the software will write your original settings back to the memory after a software update. However, rarely something will go wrong (like the programming gets interrupted) and that can cause a loss of the settings. If you save them to a file, you can always update them again after an aborted software upload.
