Got a 3800mah NiMH pack -
12.01.2009, 05:48 PM
well i did some trading and i recived a 6 cell Intellect 3800mah NiMh pack.. i got it in the mail today.. well i hooked it up to my charger and it dont beep (Prophet plus charger beeps when it "reads" a battery has been hooked up).. well after doin some voltmeter checking it has 1.6V TOTAL.. is there a way to "Zap" it?.. all the solder joints are fine.. there is 2 or 3 cells that have a voltage lower then 1V.. but i've had cells come back from 0 before but my charger also read that the pack was there when i did those.. i'm aggrevated.. i've been waiting for this pack to run my pede again.. oh and those screws PEDEBASHER!! LOL.. well can this pack be revived? or should i send it back?

Nimh lose charge when they sit. run the last bit out of it then peak it- you should be fine.

Try setting the charger to a lower cell count if you can. Like maybe 1 or 2 cells. That might make it so it detects the pack. Then you can slowly bump the voltage and keep addin cella to the charger setting untill you get the voltage up to a reasonable range.
As far as reviving the pack... I found that a very slow charge and discharge will sometimes bring a seemingly dead pack back to life. Set the charger for the cycleing mode and then charge it at a super low rate like .1amps and then discharge at the same low rate. Do this a few times until you start to see the capacity of the battery come back.
Unfortunatly, thr pnch of thrnpack never rally seemed to recover for me. Once it went dead it might get most of thr capacity back but the punch is pretty weak after that.
I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Thanks guys.. i've got it figured out.. i "jumped" it.. using a 6V battery and some extra wire to give it a few more volts.. i appreciate the info tho!!
btw my charger dont discharge batteries and it only does 1, 2, and 4 amp charges..
and brushless boy i plugged it into my pede and the esc didn't even turn on..lol thats how dead it was..

To send you a pack completely dead is not doing you any favors. I hope the pack can be saved ?

just wait until you try lipo. you can get some nice 2s packs from hc for about $20.
They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

if I got a nimh pack in that condition I would consider it junk. You may have gotten it to take a charge and work, but for how long will it work? It's lifespan has been seriously shortened by it being discharged that far for any length of time. The longer it sat like that, the more life or "cycles" it lost. Good luck.

see thats you tho.. i dont have the money to just go out and buy new stuff.. thats why its takin me so long to get LiPo stuff.. and by the looks of it its going to take me even longer to go LiPo.. all my money goes towards bills and stuff for my son.. makin $11.50 an hour and having a $1000 dollar house note on top of other bills dont leave me much room to buy anything for my RC.. so i'll take what i have and be happy with it.. i will use this battery till im dis-satisfied with it.. by that time i might have enough money saved to go LiPo but untill then.. i'll take my "junk" battery pack and continue to beat the shit outta my pede with it..
/end-rant.. (no offense)

for sure, if it's working for you and you're having fun that's all that matters. I didn't mean to say you have junk, I just wanted to illustrate the point that sitting without a charge is very hard on nimh's, I'm always leary of used batteries
