EVX2, Single Titan 775, + Lipos. Question - 12.12.2009, 12:46 PM

Gotta a question. It's so simple it's stupid... but I've gotten two different answers from two people who know a lot about stuff like this, just not my EVX2.

Got some lipos coming from HC. I was under the impression that I would be able to just connect them to the EVX2 (running a single Titan 775 motor on this Emaxx), and go. I have a choice between using a Novak Smart Stop 2s LVC on the BEC side, and I also have a 2S battery alarm coming.

The confusion is regarding whether I need a BEC or not, and whether I need to use a jumper.

If you look at this image, it implys all of the above! But the title of the page says "brushless motors", but the picture is of brushed motors. I'm not sure if it even matters.

If you select the Traxxas EVX, then you have no choice whether to run a BEC or not, and the same for an LVC.

Castle's BEC, according to their site, is designed for 3S and up. So does that mean that the 2s packs I'm gonna be running be ok and not need a BEC?

Bottom line... do I need to wire my system up like the picture says and order a BEC, etc... Or was my initial thinking correct? Oh, and I've never used an LVC or a Battery Alarm before. I'm assuming the alarm wires up the same way that an LVC does. And the reason I'm not using my Novak LVC, is because I had read somewhere that the cut off value for them was either too high or too low. Can't remember which. But the consensus was, they didn't like them. I paid like $4 for it on eBay (no reserve), brand new! No one else bid on it!

Thanks!

I have ran lipos on my evx2 with a 2s Novak smart stop and never had a problem, other than cooking the titans eventually. Hook up the LVC to the plug on the evx2 that controls the bec and your fine. There is no need for a seperate bec in this set up. If you need more help determing how to hook things up let me know and I can help

As long as you run a pair of 2s lipos, hooked up as you would with a pair of stick packs, you will be fine. The evx runs the bec curcuit off 1 pack. It is a linear bec, so it is only trying to drop the voltage down from 7.2v to 6v (or whatever it outputs).

Wire the lvc to the bec side and you will be fine.

That's what I thought, so thanks guys!

I wonder if there is anyway to minimize smoking the Titans? Lipo is a lot for them to take. Is it the heat? Maybe some fans?

Actually I will be running the lipos on an Emaxx and a Summit, both with single 775's. So that may help, or make it worse!? Titans are throwaway motors anyway. I may go brushless in the Emaxx before it's all said and done. Right now I'm thinking winter.

Because they are non-rebuildable un-like most brushed motors they tend to get really hot and smoke when they're on their way out. Nothing much can be done to prolong this aside from proper maitinance; oil shaft ends bearings or bushing whats ever in them ? and a blow job via compressed air.

I retired from RC, now life is all about guns and long range shooting.
