Yeah both HF and Grizzly have mini mills and mini lathes, but for the price difference you'd be a fool not to go with a Combo. HF stuff can be dodgy, you do get what you pay for!
The cheaper Grizzly I linked would be better for shorter, larger diameter parts. The $1295 one better for longer, smaller diameter parts. But the main advantage of the $1295 one is that it's layout is most similar to a standalone mill, and looks very user-friendly.
I would have one by now if I didn't have access to machines at work.
I can get you started on tool selection/profiles and tooling compatibility. And some basic tips on material characteristics.
I work with some lesser known stuff, Kovar, Invar, Monel, Beryllium, and Inconel to name a few.
Also all the better known stuff, so I'd be good for lots of tips.
In the meantime let's hope Castle sticks with 5mm!
