Actually NatGeo runs a documentory story about this. It is a one hour segment describing the whole incident, and also showing video footage of how they forced the military to close the place up using lead vests and shuvels to move all of the debris back into the reactor area, before sealing the whole thing up in a concrete casing. Each man was only allowed to work for about 90 seconds, and received more than a life time dosage of radiation. The Commander put in charge of the operation is still alive and conducts and interview explaining how he was ordered to handle the matter, because there was no one else qualified to deal with such a catastrophy. He was ashamed having to order men to do such a terrible hardship that would eventually bring them an early death, but you did not dare refuse.
