its not a gimmick, brushlessboy. i have used them on all my rides and noticed a big difference. in fact, the difference was too much so i used 8mm washers to dial in the amount of flex. by placing washers over shaft where the spring sits it acts like a spring retainer nut on your shocks. the more washers you use the less flex you get. anyway, i was able to dial in the right amount of flex for my track and saw noticeable gains in handling. it just felt much more supple all around. friends who drove my cars commented on that they noticed it too. check my threads on my RC8t and Losi 8b 2.0 and you will see how i used them with the washers.
