Once again. - 01.06.2010, 08:24 AM

Once again watching that was kind of funny after the fact, but he could have broken his darnned neck. The worst part is that his family and friends joked him into it. OK OK I have to share something here. I grew up with a young man in the Glenside Projects in Reading Pa 1970's. He was my best friend for many years, and after I left to join the US Navy at the age of 18 he soon followed by joining the Marine Corp as we were both trying to escape that life. He became a hand to hand combat instructor at Paris Island during his first enlistment, and everyone was so proud of him for achieving such a feet so quickly. In his fourth year he returned to Glenside as a source of pride visiting with some of the younger kids to show them that they to could get out of that life if they really worked at it. During that visit he was up at the Autalony Dam recreation park one evening with some old friends who were smoking weed and doing drugs, and he fell into the trap of thinking that a little bit would not hurt him, because he was invincible now as a United States Marine. One of his other firends was playing with his basketball and it went over the side of the dam into the water. He looked thinking that it was only like 15' or 20' to the water so he would just jump in and retrieve it. So off he went to impress those friends with his steller ability. He hit a boulder a few inches under the water and broke his neck killing him instantly. He was just 23 years old. He lifted himself up from starvation and poverty, leaving a life behind that would have surely killed him or put him in jail for most of his life, just to die doing such a stupid stunt showing off to a few so called friends. Such a waste. He was destined for greatness and died for a basketball. Too many people see this as funny stuff, but it is truly sad that young people are killing themselves for our entertainment. Just my thoughts on the video.

since I completely agree with you about wasting a life and all the sad story behind it.. I have to say that almost all of injuries that happen from jumping into water are because of stupid show off by someone who doesn't know what he's doing. Which is bad, but definitely not anybody elses fault...

I have to disagree on that point. Yes we should be able to answer for our own stupidity, but you also have to look at this from a perspective that may be unfamilar to you. Not everyone has the same mental capacity as yourself to project good sound judgment in every situation. Especially when booze or drugs are involved. Sure all of it is bad news, but some people are easily influenced by peers and even friends to do the stupidest things. But is it not our duty to protect our friends and family from harm? So if that guy died diving into that ice covered lake do you think that no one would feel guilty for goating him into that stunt? I would hope so. We have to be careful with who's lives with meddle, and we have to live with our own guilt if someone dies because of our own playful persuasions.
