It also greatly depends on whether or not the radio has some sort of voltage regulator that reduces the input voltage.

So, for example, if it's reduced to 5v, and full AA's = 12v and AA's that are worn down to about 1V = 8V, then you still have "full power."

If there's no voltage regulator, than as the AA's wear down you lose power/range, so the lipo really helps as the lipo will hold its 11.1V nominal for a long, long time and right as it's about to die, the voltage will fall really fast.
