Upgrading to brushless is more than the $50 for the motor and esc, you also need to add a servo and rx. The stock brushed esc has the rx built in and the servo isn't compatible with a standard rx. All said and done it's about $100 if you buy everything new, I'm sure there are cheaper places to get parts, thats the price from my lhs. As far as durability, they aren't to bad when stock. They are light and don't carry much momentum so things don't break often. I had the micro desert truck and never upgraded anything, never broke anything either. Now the lipos, I beleive the stock losi lipos for these have a lvc built into the battery but I'm not sure, I know the stock esc doesn't have one though.
