Gearing question... Everything running too hot - 02.10.2010, 07:42 AM

well i finally got my truck out again after way too long! Have moved back to Brisbane, Australia from London and well its all running way too hot in the summer here! Motor, esc and batts are overheating... but the batteries are the hottest and then the esc. Ideally i'd love to keep it the same speed and get it running cooler, but i dont think thats an option for me.

So i figure its overgeared and drawing too much current therefore I'm looking to change the gearing to try cool it all down. Due to my current setup i cant change the pinion any smaller as there is no clearance to move the motor closer. So.. was thinking about going bigger on the spur. will this have the same effect? Also thinking of going 1 tooth bigger on the the pinion as well. What effect will this have? just to slow the truck down more?

Currently its geared 51/16. Thoughts? Have i got it all wrong?

Also I currently have a Ofna 51T Spur. does anyone know where I can just get a bigger (say 52T) nylon gear to fit onto the ofna centre?

Oh motor is a FEIGAO 540C 8XL and Warrior 9920 controller

Thanks!

Going up on pinion will increase speed assuming you are using the same spur gear. The 8xl you are running is a hot motor anyway...so keeping any Feigao cool is a chore at times. Try running a smaller spur and see what happens if you can't change to a smaller pinion

what vehicle is this set up in...what batts are you running..more info will help as well.

thanks for the reply. my truck is an e-maxx and batts are good quality nimh, some gp, some ansmann racing.

oh and I cant go smaller on the spur as i dont have the clearance to move the motor any closer :(

I thought If I went bigger on both I could tune it from there as I would have more clearance?

If you can smaller on the pinion, go bigger (by 1-2 teeth) on the spur gear. Same effect as going to a smaller pinion while keeping the same spur gear.
