Anyone ever changed the wires of Turnigys?

Hey guys!
I have 4 Turnigy lipos here of which I need to replace the wires!
Has anyone ever done this and has any suggestions on how to do this properly?
I sort of have a bad feeling while peeling of all the casings.

Just use caution not to ever short the positive and negative contacts together.

It's no big deal to take them apart, they were apart before they were put together.

You are right to be cautious but it's really no big deal.

Just be careful while peeling the shrinkwrap off not to cut into a cell. Then once you have the tabs exposed use a good hot iron and solder away.

It can also help to cover the contacts you dont want to solder with duct tape to prevent accidently shorting the pack

All Turnigy cell tabs come up and fold over a small Board. It looks like circuit board material.

This makes them pretty easy to work with.

If you're worried about too much heat getting into the cell. A damp Paper towel will suck the heat out quickly once you're done with a solder joint.

I use Fiberglass reinforced packing tape around the ends, before recovering with heat shrink.

Thank's for the tip with the duct tape, I will do so.

The only solder I have right now is S-Sn60Pb40, is this ok for this purpose or should I use a different sort of solder?

I'm sure that will be fine. It will blend with what's already there.

You must have a qaulity high wattage iron to do this safely and quickly.

Other than that it's a cake walk when using lotsa caution.

Wear safety glasses and in a well ventilated area.

It is pretty easy to replace the wiring on Turnigy's because of the PCB. You just have to be careful not to apply too much heat for too long or the copper traces will detach from the PCB.

Why do you want to replace them anyway?

Because the 8AWG wires are to fat for the traxxas hcc.
And since I only need about 3cm of wire, I guess the higher resistance of the thinner cable is negligible.

Just great when the new shrink wrap rips while you shrink it, isn't it?

That's usually caused by too much heat in one area for too long. If using a heat gun, use a lower setting or position the gun further away.

What do you think about the effects of this PCB (besides easier soldering)? It seems a bit counter intuitive for Turnigy to use heavy duty 8AWG wire only to have this "bottleneck" so-to-speak of the thin copper traces on the PCB. Would getting rid of the PCB make any notable difference in performance?

From what I've seen on the 4s and 5s packs, the PCB is just there as a mounting point. The tabs themselves fold over each other, so there is really not much traces being used.
