My GCM RB3 is (nearly) complete! - 04.07.2010, 08:45 AM

All I'm waiting for is my Tekno Lektron 2200 to turn up and be fitted and she will be done.

Mods are as follows (based on an E-savage, though this truck was a scratchbuild from aftermarket):

Stock:
E-savage Bulks
E-savage Transmission
E-savage Plastic skids + bumpers
E-savage c-hubs

GCM:
Hex screw kit
RB3 chassis kit, thick dogbones and cups.
Custom single motor red anodised mount and heatsink
Twin Diff V2 drivetrain (alloy diffcups, modified internals with 10,000wt oil)
Exarm 'SS' edition arms with lightweight delrin uppers
Exarm CVDs to match
'SS' (super short) suspension towers
Red anodised pin holders
Red anodised bumpsteer kit
6mm friction clutch
Alloy chassis brace plate setup
Red anodised alloy skid plates

Miscellaneous:
Gorilla battery strap
HPI 17mm alloy hex set
E-maxx turnbuckles
Panic toys 'Superglide' steering kit
XTM 3.5mm thick 133.5mm big bore shocks with 40wt AE oil.
Ace Digital MG DS1515 servo
Spektrum DX3R/SR3100
Castle Creations MMPro
LPR Holeshots on Velocity rims
Turnigy 4s 5000 30c-40c lipo
Tekno Lektron 2200kv motor geared 23/66 (presently 3000kv KD36 for testing geared 17/66)

Chassis is an electrics forward design with an externally mounted servo, carrying the single lipo in the rear 'bed'. All up weight is yet to be checked, but reckoned to be around 3.7 kilos, or circa 8lbs. Size is pretty much spot on with a Revo 3.3.

Total cost of this build has been around $1500, not including customs and shipping charges.

Thanks, still waiting on a wing mount to really finish it off. I was running it on a football field the other day and hit a divot causing a major wheely followed by an end over end that ripped the bodyshell off... with the body mounts still attached. So it does have a shell, just presently no way of mounting it lol.

I thought you chaps might appreciate a build slightly different to the usual G-maxx/Savage/LST/truggy with an enormous brushless system (don't get me wrong, all very impressive!) type builds you see on here.

Forgot to say, thanks to Chris at Generis Custom Metalworks, Bithed, and the folks over at E-sav without which none of this would have been possible.

I havent seen a E-savage like that before. Awesome work! How well does the MMPro work in a truck like that?

The MMpro has so far been excellent. This truck isn't really that much heavier than a 1/8th buggy, maybe a half lb heavier so I doubt the MMpro is seeing much more abuse than it would running 4s in a buggy. Even with the hot running 3000kv KD in there. It is also so far pretty conservatively geared to avoid lunching the motor before the TL gets here.

Cool beans, it looks kinds like a maxx, savage and revo had a threesome, and your truck was the result....

Should make for one heck of a nimble basher and a good racer too, being so light. Got a shell done for it?

At the moment I'm using an old c-10 shell for it, nothing special. Like I said it's not really finished. I was just giddy because it was rolling for the first time haha.

Looks almost too wide for my taste, could be the 1/2"offset wheels, Looks almost wider than the wheelbase. Looks good though and i'm sure it'll be a cool basher

Do you have a link for the parts?

Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

Aye, Chris does some pretty awesome parts for the E-savage and Flux, the 1/5th scale Flux based Desert Boy is a beast.

My next set of wheels and tires won't be 1/2 inch offset. It is too wide with those on, almost square at the moment. Also I don't know about bashing, it's certainly tough as heck, though I built it to race unlimited MT at the track. With a little bit of massaging it could even make a fairly decent speed run truck. Certainly be lighter than a comparable truck anyway.

The handling is *stunning* by the way. Steering is ultra precise, grip roll is non existent, those shocks are just perfect... It may be slightly too short but a RB2X chassis would sort that out. (look it up on Chris's site)

lilred - your truck is looking amazing! Hope you don't mind, but here's some pics of my GCM RB2X E-Sav.

My setup:

GCM RB2X TVPs Blue
GCM SS Exarms Blue with Delrin UCAs
GCM extended wheel axles
GCM Short Towers
GCM Twin Diffs
Ofna Ultra LX-One Hard Anodized Threaded Shocks
Reckward Tuning Extra Hard (not really that stiff) Progressive Springs
Hobbywing EZRun V2 60A ESC with additional 3x 470uF 25V Caps
Hobbywing EZRun 3665SL 2300kV Motor with Heatsink and Fan
RRP 25T Mod0.8 Pinion (geared for ~45mph)
HPI 17mm Hex Adapters (not currently used...I use them with truggy wheels)
Kyosho Twin Force Battery Trays
2x 2s LiPos

It's relatively light, like E-Sav's truck, so it runs on that teeny 1/10 EZRun 60A ESC just fine. That's one thing I love about my E-Savage...it's slightly larger than a Savage Flux, is damn fast, but only needs a 1/10 brushless system to run.

Now that's a basher. You've gotta love the E-sav platform, so underrated but so adaptable.

There's no point in Traxxas making a 4x4 Stampede, we've had one all along. JSR that's one hot E-sav, the RB2X is a great chassis.

Just a thought, you thinkng of getting the ESC mount to make use of the spare motor slot? That ESC seems an awful way away from the motor.

Also, bloody hell that 60a hobby wing speedo is comfortable on a long can on 4s with a few caps? Talk about carpet bagging on the specs lol.

Yup, love the E-Sav platform. Just so many things you can turn it into. I would like to mount the ESC closer to the motor. As it is, I had to move the ESC slightly closer to the motor since it's sooo far away with the super-long RB2X chassis.
The ESC runs great with this setup. While the weight of the E-Sav is about the same as a 1/8-buggy, the tranny helps alleviate a lot of load from the motor, which resultingly takes some load off the ESC. The ESC's never broken 120F, even on a hot day at the track. And I had the ESC pushing a MUCH larger motor than that before in the E-Sav. Those little 60A EZRuns take quite a bit of abuse. And I've heard the V2s come with a pair of 470uF 25V caps already, so that means I'm running 5x 470uF 25V caps right now...sweet!

Those E-Maxx turnbuckles look much better than my CRT ones. I might pick up a set of those. Do I just get the normal ones and they'll fit fine?

I still want to do a few things like aluminum bottom support for the servos (it's the stock plastic right now and I already broke one of those). Maybe a Jedi mount which will lower the CG quite a bit. And a superglide kit.

Yes JSR, as far as I'm aware they are just E-maxx turnbuckles. Nothing special. When I get home I'll check length on them just to make sure, I think the front and rear turnbuckles are different lengths, I think you need the longer ones for the Exarms.

On another note my motor just turned up. Got some plugs soldered just waiting to get home from my parents to get it mounted. Looks pretty trick!

The RB3 is for all intents and purposes, done. New shell sprayed (and christened shortly before these pics were taken) some light but shiny rims and the Tekno Lektron motor mounted running 24/66 through a 4s pack on an MM pro.

Well, complete for now anyway.
