Best way to grind a flat spot on motor shaft

The flat spot on the shaft of my motor does not go back far enough on my motor. I did this a few years back on another motor and I attached locking pliers to the shaft and used a dremel tool but I didnt get it level so the pinion would slide forward when tightened down since it wasnt flat level. Is there any good trick to doing this? Thanks.

I just use a dremel as well and eye ball it when done. You could always take a flat file as well to help smooth out imperfections. I have had no issues w/my pinions falling off. Just don't forget the blue lock-tite as well.

Cover up the front bearing though... Poke it through a plastic bag and tape it up good...

As well as any holes in the motor can and endbells.

Im going to try to put the shaft ina vice with just a little bit of the flat part sticking up out of the top of the vice and use a file to try and get it straight this time.

Be careful to not mark up the shaft to much in the vise...you will not get the pinion on if you do.

I wrapped my motor w/a cloth then put the whole motor CAREFULLY in the vise so the shaft was sticking completely out...then as stated above used a plastic bag to poke shaft through then ground flat spot

One thing I do is place a strong magnet on the shaft opposite where you are grinding to catch the filings. That and the plastic bag should keep your front bearing nice and clean.
