The fish and birds were all a part of a cult called The Branch Animilians. It was all a part of a mass coordinated suicide. They believed it would free them from the evil alien spirits dumped into volcanoes billions of years ago that were flown aboard spaceships the looked exactly like DC9's. It is believed that the only thing that could have stopped the suicide would be the mysterious golden tablets to be found and translated. Unfortunately they were found but lost so the suicide had to move forth.
